      I interviewed at Benitago Group

      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Benitago Group (New York, NY) in Sept 2021

      Interview

Overall a not-so-great experience. I applied for the Chief of Staff role and during my initial interview I was told that the company decided to pause the search for Chief of Staff position and asked if I would consider taking on an EA role. The interviewer was very nice, but was pleading with me to at least take the interview with the CEO since they needed someone with my experience. I made it clear that I would not take a lower paying job and step back in my career, but if they were open to considering me for a CoS, I could meet with the CEO. They agreed and set up a second interview. I came on the Zoom for the interview with the CEO and waited. And then waited some more. 15min passed and I emailed my contact at Benitago who then let me know that we need to reschedule. Alright, it happens. We rescheduled for a new time in 2 days time. A couple of hours before the interview, the meeting just disappeared from my calendar. No cancelation notification, no email explaining, nothing. And I never heard from them again. I considered emailing them, but I wasn't interested in working with them at all at this point - in any capacity. I understand the startup environment can be a bit hectic, but don't waste people's time that are actually on a serious search for their next career opportunity.

      Question 1

Not many questions in a fairly long conversation. Mostly pointing out the issues the company is facing, some questions on whether or not I have had experience in these areas.

      Interview

This was, hands down, the worst interview experience of my life. I was reached out for the CoS role via LinkedIn and was genuinely excited at the prospect of working at this company. Right off the bat, I had issues scheduling my initial interview and was treated with slight contempt from the outsourced recruiter helping me. After progressing through the interview process, I completed a "case study" which took me likely ~15 hours. It was an insane ask for ANY job interview - it included a 20 slide powerpoint, 2 excel models, a market research deliverable, and countless hours of outside research on Amazon, reddit, and many other online forums. I have no idea why I did it (looking back). As I progressed through the interview process, they told me how well I was doing and that they were excited to move forward. After countless hours of interviews, I was invited to a meeting called "NAME CoS," where they proceeded to tell me that they were pausing hiring for the CoS role, but not to worry, they were going to offer me a great job instead. This job had absolute nothing in common with the CoS role and the salary was $30k less than what we had agreed upon at multiple points throughout the process. However, I realized the company also reposted the Chief of Staff position on LinkedIn (about two weeks after this occurred), indicating they were also not honest with me. On top of that, a LinkedIn recruiter reached out to me a few weeks later asking me to apply to the exact role I was offered as consolation (and turned down), indicating an utter lack of organization. Overall, my recruiting process with them was unprofessional, and their lack of candidate tracking indicates as such. I am unsurprised in reading about the layoffs and mismanagement at the company now, and feel sorry for anyone who suffered as a result of poor HR.
