      Field Engineer Interview

      28 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Canonical in Sept 2023

      Interview

I applied online and I was contacted by a recruiter a week later that I had passed the resume screen, and she gave me an overview of what the next steps are. There are 7 steps in the hiring process prior to the resume screening. The first step was a written assessment, it was weird and they asked some weird questions, "How good were you at math in high school?". The written assessment took me about 3-4 hours, you answer the questions on a Word document and upload it to a link they provide. After 2-3 days I noticed I had moved forward and had to complete standardized aptitude and personality tests. After completing this test, I had to schedule a meet-and-greet meeting with one of the field Engineers. This guy was a really nice person, we talked about the company, explained the role, and some advice about how to succeed, overall a really nice and decent interview. A couple hours after the interview I was sent a Python assessment. The assessment was really easy, you could solve all three questions with a basic understanding of Python. 2-3 days later I was sent a Linux/Networking quiz that takes around 15 mins. I would say this was harder than the Python assessment. 2 days after completing this quiz, I was asked for my availability for the next two weeks to schedule a Live 1hr Linux Troubleshooting interview. A week later on a Thursday, I was informed that the interview was scheduled for tomorrow, which gave me little to no time to prepare for it. I couldn't really reschedule the interview since it was a group interview with other candidates. The way the interview worked was that you connected to an SSH server, along with other candidates at the interview, which would allow everyone to share one terminal to use and troubleshoot some Linux issues. A week after this interview, I was sent that basic rejection email that they had decided to move forward with other candidates. Overall, my recruiter responded to my email or any questions that I had pretty quickly, in a couple of hours, and the people with whom I interacted during the hiring process were all friendly and nice. The problem is that the process is way too long, and a lot of people would rather spend their time looking for alternative jobs with a less complicated hiring process.

      Question 1

What was your ranking in math in High School? What did you do after high school? Why did you choose that? Which course and university did you choose, and why? Why do you most want to work for Canonical?

      Interview

Had to do the essay and aptitude test. Got rejected after. Was not even considered for the position. Not a good experience. the manager just clicked me away on the service they have without even reviewing my application. Feels like a waste of time, considering how long the process is

it was a very long interview process, they ask you to do an essay and several technical interviews with several members of the staff, the processes last about 30 days and you are not sure if they really want to fill the vacancies.
