      Software Engineer Interview

      30 Apr 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at CareMessage

      Interview

Interview process was mostly remote. I got to meet with many different people on the team, including C-Level folks and by and large have great conversations. (They felt like conversations, not interrogations). They seemed passionate about their work and interested in finding out what I was looking for and making sure there was a culture fit. I loved this part of the process, even though it was a bit lengthy. (I think I had about 6 or 7 interviews over the period of a month?) 2 issues: 1) The technical interview was pretty bad. Literally puzzle questions (think FizzBuzz) in an environment without access to any reference material, docs, etc and then your general software trivia questions. 2) After the end of the process they decided to go with another candidate, which is totally okay. But they also delayed decision-making without letting me know what was going on and then ghosted without any feedback or response beyond their one sentence letting me know they went with someone else. I understand this is relatively standard these days, but my feeling is that if you go all the way through an interview process with a team, have hours and hours of conversation, and make it to the final stages, they should offer some feedback on why they decided another candidate would be a better fit.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Based on the process you describe, this was an interview from 2015 or 2016. We’ve only had a handful of on-site interviews for our engineering team in the history of the company, and we went fully remote at the end of 2018. Fortunately, I am happy to let you know that our entire hiring process has gone through many iterations since then to ensure candidates are able to showcase their skills, and we revamped our process to make things more efficient. This year we made our entire hiring process available on our blog so candidates can know what to expect at each stage. We are currently working on a more efficient way to provide more feedback and transparency to candidates. As you mentioned, candidates spend quite a bit of time with us and we want to make sure we provide more insights into our decision making process. This isn’t always possible given that we wouldn’t want to disclose private information about other candidates, but we can certainly share more about the criteria we used to evaluate.
