      Interview

The interview process was fairly straight forward. If you have had a customer service role before you will be able to answer the questions confidently. Competency based questions on customer service.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Great Western Railway (Swansea, Wales) in Nov 2023

      Interview

You first apply on the firstgroup website and if you are successful you get invited to the assessment centre which is usually a local hotel and you are split into 3 groups doing activities such as flipcharts, being stranded on a yacht, a basic maths and listening test, what you would stock the trolley with and a PA announcment. If you failed the test you would be asked to leave the room and then the assessment would be over. the best way to ace the assessment is to be yourself, keep conversating in your group and listen to everyone and respect them. then if successful you get an email saying to attend an interview at the local station you applied for and the questions asked are dependant on the role applied for, Customer Host was customer service based which if you had experience before then is quite easy and f successful in your interview you will get a call to offer you a conditional offer of employment as long as you pass the conditions and a medical where you will also get your uniform sizes and order it.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thorough and thoughtful account of the recruitment process. It’s really helpful for future candidates to hear about each stage—from the initial application through to the assessment centre and interview. We’re pleased to hear you found the experience fair and that you felt encouraged to be yourself and engage with others throughout. That’s exactly the kind of approach we value—collaboration, respect, and a strong focus on customer service. We appreciate your feedback and hope your journey with GWR—whether already underway or just beginning—is a positive one.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Great Western Railway (Exeter, England) in Aug 2021

      Interview

First stage of the recruitment, About 8 members of staff were sat down one end watching the group of about 12 of us. We were put into groups of 4 and had to discuss a topic as a group eg motivation, standards and present to the rest of the room. Some were University students, college students who had perhaps more recent experience than me of presentations and group discussions. Then we were sat on an oblong table for group discussion. This should have been a round table. I was sat down one end, away from the judging panel. Hard to contribute to the discussion when you are sat down the end, Ridiculous having a long table for a group discussion, We should have been on a round table, so we could all see each other. You had to contribute to the discussion but not dominate, to listen to others and respond to them. The two that were offered the job. One was sat closest to the panel making some eye contact with them. The other was sat fairly close to the panel too, more in the middle of the table.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

We were asked, have we done anything special we want to share or met a celebrity. The person before me, really shone (they were offered the job and were a recent graduate) and it was difficult performing after them.
