I applied online for a Super Interview Day with The Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Service. A staff member contacted me by email to set up a 5-minute phone screen. On the phone screen, the interviewer asked about my educational background, the languages I spoke, and interestingly, what my prospects were after graduation.
She explained their department hired a few Pre-Med students who bailed on the department after year (training's expensive) and wanted to make sure I was not one of them. After I told her I wasn't, she signed me up for a Zoom interview with a lab manager from one of the department's research groups that best match my interests and skills.
Here's the best part: the lab manager never showed up to the Zoom interview. No call. No email. Nothing.
Confused, I texted the staff member I had the phone screen with (point of contact for that day) about the situation. She informed me that the lab manager had something come up and could not attend our interview (Yet, they could not personally notify me, great). She also told me that she'd let me know of the next steps the next day. That message never came.
In the end, I withdrew my application and let them know they were responsible for it.
If a workplace displays several red flags (disorganization, little to no communication, little consideration for others' time) even before I get hired, I do not want to work there. Simply put, I do not want to take a chance that they won't attempt the same gross behavior when I am employed.
I may need a job, but not that bad.
