Entry Level Junior Marketing Assistant Interview

      25 Jan 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at New Peak (London, England)

      Interview

I received an email the day after I sent them my CV asking me to call to arrange an interview the next day. I did so, and went to their premises (which amount to near enough a couple of rooms on an industrial estate). The office itself was nice, despite the strong smell of cheap cologne, and everyone I met was very friendly. I was seen alongside another applicant, as we were told a little about the role (very vague statements about progression, didn't really talk about what we would be expected to do). He asked me a little about my current position (graduate) and a few other, mostly asinine, questions, and then said it was nice to meet me and they would be in touch later in the day (I wanted to ask some questions but wasn't give the opportunity). I received a call later in the day saying I had impressed the manager (seeing as he hardly talked to me, I think my degree and grades impressed him), and I was invited to spend a day shadowing someone, then having a second interview. Unfortunately, I cannot comment about the second interview because I left a couple of hours into the day. I arrived in the morning and was asked to sign a disclaimer saying that I understood that this was a voluntary trial day and I could leave at any point and would not seek remuneration. I was then introduced to the person I would be shadowing, and we then began to go outside. I should add at this stage, I had been practically no information about what would be involved - at no point was I told that this job involved sales. However, my supervisor picked up a bag with a number of educational toys and a suitcase, and told me we would be going to Ealing to sell some products. Seeing as we were in Canary Wharf, I wasn't particularly thrilled by this. I informed her that I had a heart condition (I had felt no need to bring this up before because everything I had heard about this job indicated that it wasn't field-based), and we struggled onto the DLR and tube across London with all the products. When we got there, I was told that they engaged in direct marketing because 'it's free to talk to people', although I'm fairly sure that direct marketing is also researched and targeted towards specific companies, because I was told that we would be going to every shop to try to sell this product (seeing as most of them were beauty salons, I wasn't convinced by this approach). However, I didn't even see any selling, as my supervisor informed me we would be doing a 'bag drop' before we went on to selling, i.e. storing the bags with spare products for an hour or so. I assumed that they had another office where they could do this, but it turned out they were just walking into businesses and asking if they could leave bags there for an hour. After being refused by about four businesses, I thanked her and said it was not for me, and left (having spent about 20 mins walking through the cold with them, which isn't easy with my condition), not wanting to go to every shop on the high street trying to peddle these wares. My main annoyance is that I was not told this would happen at any time, and I wasn't given a lot of opportunities to ask questions. Unless you're particularly wanting to go into sales, I would avoid this place. I also heard that you earn money purely through commission, which was hidden from me, and I would not have applied if I knew the true nature of the job. New Peak should be more honest with their advertisements at the very least.
