I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Octav (Montreal, QC) in Jan 2023
Interview
They like to exploit you right out of the gate. I was given a take-home test without any instructions other than making a backend to return a massive JSON object (they provided) and have the frontend render it. The idea is you then spend 2-4 hours talking to them on their discord so you can get your head around the massive JSON graph they gave you. This is how the company has figured out how to save money on training. You do the training for free before they ever offer you a job. I identified this immediately and knew I wouldn't partake in that process. Since I had some time on my hands and I love building software I took a crack at a short version of their test. I knew that if they wouldn't accept a short version I wasn't interested in working with them. I built a responsive dashboard with pie charts. I spent 7 hours on it and was told it was way too light. I was told that so far nobody had done more work than a JR candidate. Boy, I think that's a clue. Only the JR was stupid enough to spend 5 days on a take-home test. This company also offers three payment packages. Each package has either more money or more equity. That was a big red flag for me also. This just screams exploitation. Equity is a lottery ticket with very bad odds.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
I honestly don't even remember the interview. It was short and very casual. They're banking a lot on their take-home test and so far no SR dev has completed it to their standards. They will eventually clue in and change the test.
