      Art Director Interview

      26 Sept 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Rode Advertising (New York, NY)

      Interview

First I met with a small group, including Ron Nelson the male partner, which went great. I was then asked to come back to meet Debbi, the female partner, "as a formality," which ended up being a nightmare. She complained that my portfolio was online rather than printed, and then made several very inappropriate comments. "I hope you're not planning on having a baby anytime soon, because the hours can be very long and erratic." "This probably also won't work if you have a therapist appointment to run off to every week." Overall she was abrasive, inappropriate, and it definitely wasn't the "just a formality" - type second interview I had been led to believe it would be. More like, "let's watch the newbie squirm and see if she can take it." Afterwards, I was told that they liked my work but wanted to make sure it was a "good fit", and asked if I could freelance for a day or two to see how it would work. I took off work from my full time job and came in for three days, working on a pitch project, which went fine. After that, they asked me to come back and do MORE freelance work, for which I said I couldn't continue to take off work from my full-time job. They said they would find something I could do remotely, but then never did. By this time I felt pretty strung along and also felt that the office environment was a bit dysfunctional, so I didn't follow up.
