      Flight Attendant Interview

      19 Dec 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Newark, NJ
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at United Airlines (Newark, NJ) in Dec 2015

      Interview

I started my application with United on November 30th, and on December 1st I was invited to complete a web-based interview. The questions weren't bad or hard, but it was different talking into a camera and not to a person. I personally had such a hard time answering the questions because I'd never had a web interview like that before and it was really different talking to a camera with nobody feeding off of what I was saying. Imagine my surprise when on the 8th, I was invited to attend a face to face interview! The email that was sent to me had a list of dates that I could attend, so I called the next morning on the 9th and scheduled my interview for the following week. United flew me from my closest airport to Newark, NJ, and I stayed at the SpringHill Suites across the street. The hotel was nice and clean and not too expensive, and there's a free shuttle that takes you to/from the airport every half hour which was great for the next morning getting to the terminal. The next morning came and I took the 7am shuttle to the airport for my interview at 9. I got to the airport and went to the customer service desk for a gate pass (the interview is in the terminal, so you have to go through security (BE EARLY, SECURITY CAN TAKE A LONG TIME AT NEWARK). I made it through security and walked to the gate where we were told to sit in a specific location. I was about an hour early, which honestly I recommend. I was able to talk to everyone there and joke around and it made me so much less nervous because I knew it wasn't just me feeling it. At exactly 9am the recruiters came to get us, and we went to a secure location where we watched an informational video on the position, and at the end we had a chance to talk to a couple of flight attendants who also happened to be recruiters and ask questions. Once the Q&A was ended, all of the recruiters took someone into a room with cubicles to be interviewed. I was the third one called, but other people waited for up to an hour to be called because they had to wait for an interviewer to finish with the first interview before coming back for a second one. So be prepared to wait for a while! My interviewer was really nice. He asked me about my experiences, past positions, why I wanted to be a flight attendant. One question he asked was if I really understood what it meant to be on reserve, and then asked me to explain to him exactly what I thought it meant. One or two situational questions. Just be honest and straightforward, and you'll be fine! The interview lasted about half an hour, and at the end of it he thanked me for my time and then asked if I'd be alright with meeting with some of his colleagues! I of course said yes and was lead to another room to wait, where I sat for about half an hour until another recruiter came to get me. This time I was interviewed by two people, and they were much more down to business. They asked me why I thought the experience I've had would be relevant to the position, and I knew that it all was so I just told them why. Customer service, safety positions, it all related. Everything we discussed was straight off my resume, so tailor your resume to the exact position and highlight your qualifications that sell you the best. Both interviewers were so nice and great, albeit a bit intimidating. We finished talking and the woman told me that they'd be right back, they just wanted to discuss something quickly. A couple minutes they came back in and sat down and the woman spoke again and told me that they had all the information that they needed, thank you for coming in today, and that they would like to extend an offer to me right then and there! I remember that had a giant smile on her face and asked if I was ready to go to California (I told her that's where I'd choose to be based if I got the chance), so I was super excited! I immediately said yes and thank you (I was so excited but I did my best to remain completely professional). She then told me that I'd be driven to another location on property to complete a drug screening, a hearing test, and a vision test. I also filled out paperwork. By the time I got to the clinic it was around 1pm. I did all my testing and finished around 2:30. I think there were 8 of us that were hired the day of the interview, out of about 18. I missed my flight home but was rescheduled on the last one out, so it was a very long day. But a great day!
