      Vice President Digital Lab Interview

      6 Aug 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Gothenburg, Västra Götaland
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Volvo Group (Gothenburg, Västra Götaland) in Jun 2017

      Interview

They were using an external executive staffing agency to filter candidates. After a phone interview with the executive recruiter she then brought me in for a face to face. We then had some back and forth to schedule an interview on site at Volvo Trucks in Gothenburg, Sweden. Originally I was told I was one of three candidates, then it became 5 or 6. Overall it was well organized, although the follow up was quite poor. The questions were not at all what I expected and the setup was a bit weird. I was interviewed by the SVP with a Volvo HR person in the room as well as the recruiter. Those two did not talk and the SVP was reading 6 questions from a script, and everyone was taking notes. It was all behavioral. The SVP knew next to nothing about digital and is mostly a sales/general manager type, so they really did not know what to look for. I think they were likely looking for someone who could tick the boxes around general management since this is not a very innovative culture. It should be noted that the creation of this role fell out of a McKinsey project, so Volvo more or less outsources all of their strategy work and then fumble their way through the execution part (almost always unsuccessfully). The interview took a full two hours and there was no time for me to ask questions. The SVP was a bit late to start and was eager to get me out of the room. Again, it was a strange interview as it seemed like they were trying to strip out all possible human interaction, as he wasn't allowed to ask any follow up questions or probe. It was about as an unnatural conversation as you can imagine having with strangers. I was told this was the final round but then it changed so that there would be one more round, but I was not invited to that one. The recruiter left a message for me stating this but no other information about selection criteria, etc. Volvo is very conservative and the fact that the interview process did not include any questions around digital strategy, past experience, etc., tells me a lot.
