The challenge was designing and implementing the UK’s largest fluvial flood defence initiative in a way that promotes fairness and supports communities, especially those with protected characteristics. Our solution involved a robust Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA), developed through seamless collaboration across disciplines, to identify potential impacts and ensure the voices of affected residents were central to the process. By integrating health, equality, and social value considerations early on, we helped shape mitigation strategies and foster strong community ties.
