In turmoil

Pros

Depending on the manager you get, new ideas can be welcomed.

Cons

Aviall is being run by Boeing, who expects increases in sales with the same number or fewer employees. They take advantage of the hard work of the good employees. Morale in some departments is so low because they do not feel supported by senior management.

Pros

If you are driven, no door is closed to you. Opportunities to learn other specialties, for personal and professional development and to move up are plentiful - but they aren't handed to you, you need to seek them. Employee friendly culture with good focus on well being (physical and mental).

Cons

If you get the wrong manager, your work life balance might suffer. Management not great at communicating. Opportunities and resources are not handed to you on a silver platter.

Hubris Reigns Supreme

Pros

Large, relatively stable company, that is a subsidiary of Boeing. This company has been around a long time and has a solid balance sheet despite severe budget mismanagement. Many of the people, especially the legacy employees, are top tier and a pleasure to work with when the environment isn't dragging them down. The marketing department also has some very talented young professionals, especially those managing Aviall's online reputation and social media presence.

Cons

Hubris is the name of the game at Aviall. Having managed several IT projects, I have witnessed this inflated sense of self and arrogance from functional IT managers to IT senior management, and all management levels in-between. I can only assume that these individuals were awarded their positions because so many mistake hubris, or false confidence, as competence. Per Wikipedia, "Hubris often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one's own competence, accomplishments or capabilities, especially when the person exhibiting it is in a position of power." What else is dreadfully unfortunate at Aviall is that this same hubris exists in the highest offices. Oddly, the top executives at Aviall all present themselves as devoutly religious Christians, yet they demonstrate this arrogance that is itself a sin. Quite the contradiction. The result of the massive management and leadership failures now plaguing Aviall is a terrific loss of morale and sense of unease that is rife within the employee ranks. During a prolonged and defect-ridden SAP implementation, employees were asked to work excessive hours for very extended periods, and without any additional compensation. On top of this, management initiated numerous re-orgs and layoffs, apparently in order to oust those that did not agree with the direction they were driving the company, to reduce future pension exposure, and make way for outsourcing. This may have also been an attempt to bolster future profits as the revenues coming into the company have been flat since I have been here. This demoralization of the workforce has made my job as a project manager much more difficult, as it is tough to find a motivated resource.

Pros

Benefits used to be good with a retirement plan and good bonuses for managers and up.

Cons

Too many layoffs after Boeing took over and the cash cow started to run dry due to a bad airplane parts market.
