I have been working at B&M Retail part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Often there is overtime available if you're looking to earn some extra money. Very much a customer based role which gives an opportunity to develop skills for you future endeavours.

    Cons

Low contracts which makes it difficult to live off your wage due to not being guaranteed the hours. Despite working 25+ hours a week consistently for a period of time you're still stuck on an 8 hour contract and then your hours are cut back with no notice which makes it very difficult to plan financially.

    Advice to Management

Analysing contracts more frequently will help massively in staff retention and productivity.

I have been working at B&M Retail full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

+the colleagues are a fantastic team, really become a second family
    +the work is easy

    Cons

-managers expect the world with minimal staff on shift
-high turnover of managers and the lack of standardisation between them means the staff have no idea what they want us to do each day.
    -low pay
-VERY irregular hours, we have often been rang up on the day of a shift change and are expected to come in.
-they make you feel guilty for not wanting overtime and will not call you for overtime if you decline them once.
-though easy, the work is tedious and often feels like a losing battle with the size of some deliveries.

    Advice to Management

standardise procedures between managers and make hours more solid, if hours need to change tell us a few days to a week in advance

    Pros

Relaxed And Friendly Staff and atmosphere, possibility to get a small bonus for employee of the month to spend in store.

    Cons

i have nothing in objection to the company values and morals, they are a great company to work for.

    Advice to Management

Double check Supervisors and/or Management as i have had a load of problems that ended up effecting my income on a rather large scale for my current wages and hourly rate.

I worked at B&M Retail full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are people in this business who want to do a good job, and want to succeed

    Cons

    Micromanagement is prevalent

The focus on task is so intense, that many managers within the business have lost sight of what that task is intended to achieve, and thus any deviation in the search for better ways of working is a frightening concept for them

Planning is almost non-existent. It is a rarity for colleagues to have more than a week’s schedule in advance. Despite a company rule stating no colleague’s shifts to be amended with less than 48hours notice without consent, this happens on a daily basis. This has included new starters having no schedule until 4 days after their induction, a colleague getting their first week’s schedule after the end of their second shift that week, and colleagues returning from annual leave to find their days and times of work completely changed.

Employee welfare concern is non-existent. Return to work meetings are a rarity, and the outcomes of those meetings are ignored with colleagues asked to work beyond what has been agreed as reasonable amendments.

Managers are encouraged to spend hours watching colleagues working on CCTV to observe what is being done, acting in hindsight rather than work alongside and lead their teams.

The management structure and culture within the company is task oriented with an attitude geared towards breaking down colleagues for fault and blame. The inability of key managers to build and develop teams and individuals is crippling and resulting in excessive employee turnover.

    Advice to Management

CCTV use needs serious review - what I witnessed was not reasonable use, but ineffectual management, and at worst voyeurism.

The stock management system is poor. Track this back to the source - if you can get the DCs to ensure picks are accurately logged and accounted for, you could ensure stores can target their stock control efforts

Plan ahead. Stores should be planning schedules a bare minimum of 4 weeks in advance. Enforce it

    I worked at B&M Retail part-time

    Pros

Flexible hours, management are nice (depends on the store though), really nice people work there as well

    Cons

With all the talk about how much money they make, they could pay more than minimum wage
