Pros

The lower and mid-level people are great and the mission is inspiring.

Cons

The top level management has turned over several times in the company's short history and the CEO can't keep a team together. Mismanagement from the CEO causes chaos through the organization and the team can't manage or meet project deadlines. Boom has blown through funding that was intended for goals and benchmarks that are long overdue, and are not even close to completion. Two of three founders have left the company and turnover in management roles is multiples above industry standards. As a pre-revenue company the future of Boom is dependent upon a Series C raise, but the community understands that it is no longer a sound investment. Take a look at the early targets and goals publicized by the company in 2017 and compare them to where they are today. The CEO is a fantastic story teller and visionary, but likens himself to Jeff Bezos as an operational leader. The results paint a very different picture; he can't achieve goals.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Turnover can happen in start-ups evaluating the right leadership to move the business forward. I’m confident that we’re in a great place today with our leadership team. We’ve been fortunate to hire industry leaders in their respective fields. We have achieved multiple goals in 2022 including announcing our Superfactory site in Greensboro, NC, another airline customer in American Airlines, several supplier partnerships, and a strategic partnership with Northop Grumman. While your review is from 2020, we believe if you were writing this today, the results would paint a different picture. ~Anne

Pros

Boom Supersonic is the best hardware/aerospace startup to work for in Colorado. Colorado is one of the best states to live in, I can't say enough positive things about working here. Boom has highly motivated employees, everyone has tons of passion for the product, and everyone is bought in 100%. There are generous perks: essentially unlimited vacation, lunch and snacks provided for employees, and a casual dress code. Unlimited La Croix too. There is transparency throughout the company top-to-bottom - for instance monthly AMAs with the leadership team, and they are disappointed if employees aren't asking difficult questions. Boom's goal is ambitious, the work is hard, but I wouldn't want to be working anywhere else. Living and working in Denver is unreal - easy access to world class hiking, camping, climbing, and skiing, great food and awesome beer. I still can't get used to how insanely nice the weather is every day. Denver is growing but has minimal sprawl compared to West/East coast cities, easy to escape into the mountains and avoid the crowds.

Cons

The company has grown over 100% every year so far, continuing to maintain an inclusive and consistent culture across the company is difficult and something that everyone is aware needs to be addressed. This won't go away soon as we will continue to grow for a long time. The work is challenging and time consuming in every position - if you're looking for a 40 hour work week this likely isn't a great fit, not really a con but something to be aware of when considering applying. Working at a growing startup like Boom means there are poorly defined roles and responsibilities. Everyone's roles are much more broad than a traditional company. This can be a challenge if you thrive in a structured environment, and there can be frustration trying to drive a project to completion without clear decision makers.

Thank you for such a thorough review of your experience at Boom. I’m so happy to hear it’s been the best start-up in Colorado for you to work at, and hope that we continue to hold that award for you. Our leadership team does not shy away from hard challenges and hard questions. We value a diverse and inclusive culture where everyone belongs! This is a top priority for Boom and something we are actively working on evolving as we continue to grow at the pace we have been. ~Anne

Pros

Amazing mission, really talented and smart people, really generous perks for its employees, has taken care of folks during COVID-19 better than anything I've ever seen and shows its care for its people a ton, provides more transparency internally than almost anyone else, and moves fast and with a real commitment to innovation and agility. Relative to more traditional aerospace companies, you get a much broader set of experiences and more responsibility earlier in your career. Its a really cool hybrid of tech startup and aerospace company. Best swag in the business - only thing that will look better will be when the plane in the hangar is finished!

Cons

Typical start-up challenges - we're trying to do something really hard that's normally not done by start-ups and there's certainly risk involved. They took too long to exit a number of bad performing leaders who created a lot of drama (and probably a few of the sad and bitter reviews here that paint a misleading picture).

Thank you for sharing your experience! We appreciate the call-out on our Covid-19 protocol. It was critical that we kept our employees safe during that difficult time. I appreciate you recognizing that Boom has had typical start-up challenges. We aim to hire top talent and enable them to build a career at Boom, but often times that may not work out for various reasons. Currently at Boom we hold employees accountable for delivering in their role, and do this by setting clear expectations and goals. ~Anne
