Pros

Variety of instrumentation - good to learn new analytical techniques (if you’re in the right department - otherwise you’ll get pigeon holed with minimal opportunities).

Cons

Toxic culture. Inter-departmental attitude issues. Many incompetent individuals lording themselves above others (power tripping). Unsupportive management who constantly try to undermine people from other departments. Causes rifts between departments and unnecessary stress to hard working individuals. Priorities are warped - look after your staff and they will look after the clients. This is not the case; at Broughton they break the backs of their staff to desperately try and deliver on their over-promises to clients. More often than not, the promises aren’t delivered and leave sour tastes in client’s mouths. Clients are often lied to which adds pressure to internal staff to deliver impossible timelines (e.g. “we have a validated method for X” when in reality, no one has even thought about that method let alone started developing it). No matter how hard you work, no one knows how to say “thank you”. It truly was a toxic experience with a culture of hate and spiteful behaviour. Glad to be out of it. Took leaving to realise how much negativity I had been putting up with. To my point above about pigeon-holed staff - lab staff are blinkered to their one job and do not have the opportunity to learn the full process of the lab. Leads to mistakes as people are disengaged. Prevents smooth running as people are unaware of anything outside of the bubble of their role. Even when asking for more experience, people aren’t trusted and are led on until they eventually just leave. As for COVID-19 handling... no social distancing on site. Not even managers taking it seriously. In fact, senior managers on site have openly joked about it whilst getting far too close to staff. Massive shambles. In typical fashion, no one has listened to try and make things better.

We are surprised at this review as it does not match the sentiments expressed in either the exit interview or in the email to a member of senior management sent at the time of resignation. We would like to address a number of the points made. Lying to clients - This is a very strong claim and one which is entirely unfounded and completely untrue. We make promises to our clients in order to meet their individual requirements and always work extremely diligently to deliver these. An open dialogue and trusted relationship is maintained with clients so they are aware of any problems we may encounter. COVID19 - a large proportion of the team spent the majority of the time this year working from home (including the reviewer) as part of our COVID19 risk management strategy. We have reduced our on-site headcount to the minimum and have implemented headcount limits and increased distancing in all rooms as part of an ongoing risk assessment. Unsupportive management – This directly contradicts the sentiments expressed in email and exit interview, both of which praised management and the company for the opportunities given. Over the last 3 years, we have grown significantly as a business. We have faced challenges along the way and converted these into opportunities. This is thanks to the amazing hard-working people at Broughton who have adapted to change and have seen the business grow from a team of 15 to a team of over 70. Our team, including the reviewer, have had and continue to have opportunities to develop within a rapidly growing business that are unlikely to be found in a more traditional organisation. Our culture at Broughton has always been to attract great people and to create the right environment for them to thrive. We accept the fact that we cannot please everyone.

Abysmal and Unprogressive

Pros

Good steppingstone for a recent graduate straight out of university to get initial experience within the industry, learn the basics and move on (however don't base your experience here on how other companies are). Free biscuits for your tea!! If you are lucky you will meet some amazing people who will get you through all the ups and downs of life at BNS.

Cons

It may be a fast-growing company but there is a reason why the majority of recent employees have left after 1-2 years. It is very hard to progress further and gain experience with instruments even after persistently asking in every 1-1 meeting. You'll be very lucky if you are not pigeonholed into one department for the entirety of your time there with minimal responsibilities (even though they promise they don't do this in your interview). When internal positions become available, unless you "fit" their "criteria" you won't even be considered. Hardworking individuals are not recognised unless you're a brown-noser. Training is shoddy. If you are hired when they are busy, you'll be dumped and expected to pick up everything yourself. You have to consistently ask for more training on the basic things that should be given your first week there, if you are not in the instrument team don't expect any hands-on training on any instrument. Undermining and unsupportive management. Instead of helping and aiding their team, they would let other managers and employees berate them just to avoid ruffling some feathers. Just shows there is no integrity. Scapegoating employees and bringing them in for a "meeting" which in turn is just a scolding match where you are belittled and not even asked your side of the story. Management treating staff like they were back in school when team meetings took place, just highlighting negative feedback. Lazy and incompetent team leaders who stand idly by while the rest of the team is overworked. Company bites off more than they can chew by wanting to impress clients and take on too much work. But this just leaves lab staff overworked and stretched just to meet your crazy unattainable deadlines. Therefore, when things go awry the lab analysts are blamed. On the other hand, there will be periods where there is nothing to do. No communication between labs. You are given a task and instead of fully discussing what can and can't be done, how much of something is available and doing all the background first you as an analyst are using up your time chasing people from other labs to find out what is needed. Staff that have been there for many years will lord that over you and use it as a means to justify their actions. More often than not they will be the reason for the toxic nature between the departments and they feel they're better than the rest. The environment can be very toxic and unwelcoming with departments feeling like they're better than others and spreading of unnecessary gossip just to feel a buzz. Get a life! Many companies provide the same company benefits as you do if not probably more and pay employees with the same experience and title better wages. Just treat ALL your employees fairly and get rid of the toxic "we're better than you" nature and you might get employees that want to stay and better the company.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We always make sure that any vacancies that come up which may be suitable for internal candidates are advertised to the team before we go public. In the past two weeks, we have offered positions to 4 internal candidates across 3 roles. In addition to this, we are rolling out a wide-ranging secondment plan to allow team members to gain experience in other teams and other departments. We have invested heavily in our training and development, with (virtual) attendance on courses to learn about instrumental techniques, regulations and more. Internal resources are under regular review to ensure they are as good as they can be. We have also invested in LinkedIn Learning for every member of the team. In terms of management, as we grow we increase the numbers of management and team leaders to ensure that all team members have close contact with someone who can support them.
