One of the best culture you'll ever experience

Pros

Culture is amazing as the organisation is made up of really down-to-earth and kind people in general. There's barely any hierarchy so work feels like a place where everyone just wants to help one another succeed. Even the co-founders are very reachable. It's a good place to start in where it's a safe place to fail and receive lots of guidance. I honestly don't think there's a better workplace culture out there.

Cons

Progression might not be great, either due to company prospects or ineffective managers. So don't expect to stay there too long unless you value familiarity and comfort.

Pros

1. flexible working hours 2. able to work from home 3. free food during employee gathering on Friday 4. casual startup atmosphere 5. they got new improved health benefits

Cons

1. instability, KPI changed every now and then 2. some incompetent and micromanaging managers who can't handle criticism 3. lack of transparency regarding decision making in executive level 4. literally no room for growth, there is no clear criteria for a promotion and most employees will be stuck in the same entry level position 5. no leadership development 6. someone mentioned that Carousell has a useless employee feedback system: I can confirm this. employers rarely followed up the issues voiced out by employees

Thank you for sharing this valuable feedback. Means a lot to me because the things you mentioned are things we do not want to see at Carousell. For 1. and 3. I agree we can do better. In fact, no excuse to why you do not know how decisions are made and you feel there is instability. We need to do better to create stability so operations can be better planned and executed. KPI changing unreasonably and unknowingly are not acceptable. We have acknowledged the work to improve and have since started the foundational and structural change by engaging industry experts to our board to work on them. For example, we now have Colin Bryar, a former technical advisor to Jeff Bezos from Amazon as an advisor to us. He has been deeply involved in working behind the scenes to review our reporting and management structure; relooked at our upcoming strategic planning process to engage and leverage the squad on ground expertise to set our strategy. For 2. 4. 5. We acknowledged that some managers need support. And we engaged a HR consultant (IKIGAI Consultancy Services) to help set up a career and competencies framework. It is called MyCarou Growth (Carousell Growth Plan). It is a framework for all employees whether you are a manager or an individual contributor. They will know what is expected of them. We are also launching Lattice - a performance management tool - for reviews and accountability. IKIGAI Consultancy Services have also done leadership training workshops and some of our managers have individual coaches to guide them. Helping them develop a growth mindset instead of fixed/defensive mindset. Lastly for pt 6. This is something we can do better. We typically do not do well communicating what we have addressed and what is work in progress. Some of the things you pointed out are structural and systematic changes/adjustment. For example, it takes time to build up the framework; evaluate vendor and engage consultants. Despite what i have shared so far, I still think we can do better because there will be blindspot we may miss. If you have any other ideas or things i overlooked from pt 1-6, Do not hestiate to reach out. email me at marcus@carousell.com Deeply appreciate you taking time to share this here. It helps highlights the challenges and opportunities we are facing due to our rapid growth. The specific kind of character and help we need for those readers reading this or considering a career at Carousell now. It's going to be exciting working on scaling challenges. - Marcus, Co-founder

Pros

-Awesome co-workers who are passionate about the company and makes job bearable -Free catered lunch every friday

Cons

-Very hacky and inefficient processes. I understand it is a start-up but some practices are questionable -Unclear promotional criteria or even pay raise. Very hush hush nature, even managers not clear on how to recommend staff for promotion -Useless employee feedback system. There is an anonymous system in place where you can voice out grievances but no actual follow up done -Unorganized upper management and leadership team
