Pros

It has a relax ambience and lots of flexibility. You are not in a corporate world, no bureaucracy and you're part of the family. You don't need to wear business attire, can potentially work remote if you are trustworthy and have flexible hours. I could switch my weekend to weekdays if there is no immediate deadlines or meetings. They involve you in company meetings and decisions by having weekly staff meetings and quarterly workshops. The company believes in green, sustainable design. They are not afraid to try something new even though there may be growing pain of learning including some financial loses. We did and wrote a study of minimizing virus spread thru thoughtful HVAC (re-)design to prepare building owners to open after Covid lockdown. They are more of a boutique engineering company than a cookie cutter. They will let you be an independent thinker and no micro managing. This company will fit for those who are independent, love to have work-life harmony, and like the small company feeling. Everyone there is nice and loves the outdoors. The owner is very smart and knowledgeable.

Cons

There was still some growing pain. We were working on streamlining the processes to make the work more efficient and thus, produce more revenues which benefit everyone. The owner was spread thin between different hats and sometimes things fell in the crack because of it, such as not delivering project on time or no time for QC. He needed help to take some of the load off.

Pros

Working with the other employees that were swindled into employment under false pretenses. We all shared a common bond—as we huddle together in the corner—of being unexpectedly yelled at, celebrating hypocrisy, and witnessing UFOs being propelled by anger as they suddenly make impact with the office walls.

Cons

The owner is still learning how to be a manager. He was heard on the phone saying, “I am not a good manager,” but takes it personal and get obnoxiously defensive if any attempt is made to help him with it. On the other hand, he talks about his 11 years of owning a business and that he shouldn’t be questioned because of his “experience,” but seems to have a tough time seeing that his “experience” hasn’t helped him understand management during the same 11 years. The owner stated, “I am not here to teach,” as he hires nothing but recent college graduates looking for professional engineering growth. The turnover rate is so bad that nobody has been there longer than a year, besides the owner. There is no self-reflection on his end, and thus a root cause analysis eludes him, as does sound judgement, causing him to be stuck in a perpetual cycle of “small business” mistakes. He cares more about quantity than quality. Past projects continue to haunt the office. Projects that should have never made it out the door of the office without a proper QC process come back being called “unbuildable”. He refuses to take the time to review drawing sets and blames his first year college grads when they come back with errors after being forced to perform their own QC on their own drawings, and then the drawings go straight to being blindly stamped by the owner. The process feels more like an inefficient sweatshop than something we went to school for.

Pros

I hired on with DMA Engineering in June 2021 after a thorough three-part interview. My role as Program Manager is to implement and oversee operational systems that help DMA manage its resources, be responsive to clients and partners, and to facilitate effective communication. DMA’s success is a testament to the commitment, dedication, and focus of the company’s principal, marketing team, and network of building partners. Having worked previously worked within a similarly-sized engineering firm, I am thoroughly impressed by scope and success of DMA Engineering’s project portfolio. This group is passionate about sustainability and energy efficiency. All projects are progressive and held to a constant evaluation for excellence. DMA focuses on proposals and projects that are a good fit for its mission to “make the world a better place – now and for future generations.” This is evident in the way the business operates--and in the way team members live their everyday lives (sustainably and consciously). I thoroughly enjoy the creative and collaborative nature of this focused team of professionals.

Cons

The DMA Engineering team and capacity is expanding significantly and therein lies plenty of challenges (and opportunities).
