      Do not work here

      Pros

New Chief Executive coming in, perhaps a tiny chance of some changes?

      Cons

Pay is extremely poor for new starters. Pay is insulting for experienced scientists and engineers. Pay is risible for those at chartered status or equivalent levels of experience. There is no effort from senior leadership to change this.

The joke that is..... the DSTL Fellow.

Nov 22, 2021 - Principal Engineer in Fareham, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

More recently, the organisation has concocted a misleading, non-job title ...... the so-called DSTL "Fellow". The reality is that these people fall into one of to categories: either they earned a degree or PhD decades ago and have never used it since, or they have worked in the MOD for decades. ........ That's it, folks! Nothing more. That just about sums up a Fellow at DSTL. No academic publishing record whatsoever, no research undertaken, no technical knowledge to speak of, but hey, you're a "Fellow". What a joke. Yet another example of DSTL cronyism. But then, DSTL regularly misleads its own staff, the General Public, the Media, and Central Government, so this should come as no surprise. Avoid this circus.

      Cons

      Lots of cons. Indeed. Avoid.

Great for new starters, not great for middle career

Oct 5, 2021 - Senior Systems Engineer in Portsmouth, England
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Lots of learning and development opportunities. Very interesting work and can try out different projects before developing your niche. Work fully supports and pays all the fees for professional subscriptions and chartered engineer.

      Cons

Single pay point means that a newly promoted person gets the same pay as the person with 20+ years of experience! Also after principal, promotion potential is zero. Work here for 8 or so years after graduation and go private!

      Don't Stay Too Long

Sep 28, 2021 - Senior Engineer in Sevenoaks, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Work life balance is good. Opportunity (if you're lucky) to work on some amazing programmes. Genuinely diverse and inclusive, with good networks if that's your sort of thing.

      Cons

Management bullying and primadonna managers, who have never actually done a job elsewhere, havenever been addressed. The pay divide between dstl and the world outside continues to grow. There is no parity with "main MOD", to the extent that at the last management/union talks, dstl senior leadership denied we were part of the MOD. Very strange as it says MOD on my shirt and in my email signature block. However, this does sum up the sort of delusion of those at the helm.

The organisation is declining so quickly. People are running for the door.

Oct 18, 2021 - Senior Analyst in Porton, England
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      Flexi time is quite useful.

      Cons

      i) The work is not proper research in the academic sense. Most of your time is spent doing admin, talking through a headset, and writing emails, managing external 3rd-parties who do the actual technical work (universities or industry-based partners). ii) There are too many cliques, it's a bit like being back at school. iii) Funding is extremely tight, it feels like Dstl is running out of money. iv) Too much time is spent promoting and pushing political agendas and championing dubious causes, rather than focusing on science. v) The management is poor, almost to the point of being negligent.
