Pros

- One of the only unionized tech shops in civic engagement. - Solidarity among lower ranked staff to try to make DW better, unfortunately met with constant pushback and retaliation from management.

Cons

- I’ve been genuinely traumatized by this place. I was not going to write a review out of respect for my colleagues but once I saw the announcement of the interim CEO becoming the permanent CEO I could not stand by any longer. - Thankfully I quit and am not bound by a NDA, unlike many of my colleagues who have been fired from this place and are unable to speak to their remarkably destructive experiences at DW. - Incredibly toxic and siloed communications led to a culture that has truly hindered the potential of the really important work being done. - MGMT has no vision for the future of their work, even though DW has been a leader in this space for years with incredible connections and a large endowment to make more useful tools. - I watched many of my favorite colleagues get retaliated against, fired and held back from promotion. Almost all of which were BIPOC/LGBTQ+. - Many, many anti-union busting tactics. The blazon level of intimidation and gaslighting at the org was (and still is) doing is outright unacceptable. - The Board says and does nothing, even after being briefed on the working conditions of staff. No one will hold this place accountable for the careers it has destabilized, and the only hope for a new CEO to save the institution has failed. Please, if you are considering working here look at other nonprofit jobs that you could contribute your energy to. This is not the place to put your time and talent.

Pros

Some benefits are decent for the nonprofit sector but not exceptional. The union is a good space for non-management staff, and is made up of some kind and smart people. Remote work environment.

Cons

The many cons include: -Upper managers are unskilled in the content area (only one VP/Chief has elections/civic tech experience); -Lack of clarity and direction from upper management on the mission/vision; -Lack of cohesiveness across teams; -No room for growth for employees & no interest in retention (probably over half of all employees left DW in 2021/2022); -Hostile work environment for anyone with an open association to the union; -Very obvious favoritism and personal bias by upper management; -Unrealistic expectation of workload per person; Those are all in addition to significant racist, sexist, and anti-union tones in the org culture modeled by upper management.
