Pros

The surrounding area is beautiful and a great place to raise a family. The projects and technology are interesting. You can pick up a significant amount of responsiblities if you work hard and show interest.

Cons

GDAIS in Pittsfield underpays employees and does not empower employees to make critical decisions. The company has been doing the same thing the same way since it was GE. It is structured like a matrix org but behaves like a flat org i.e. all of the authority/decision making is held closely by top managment. It is a great place if you want to stay in one position for a long period of time but be careful, you will be pigeon holed if you display a strong ability in one area. Managers are normally promoted within and it is based on how you much time you spend y "outside" of work i.e. golf, dinner parties with current management that dictates how you will be promoted. Promotoins are rarely given and when they are it is not due to the ablity to execute and lead.

Pros

Good work life balance Projects matter for our war fighters Most co-workers are competent and dedicated More work than people, and moving to other engineering jobs is possible

Cons

Some numbskulls seem to get into senior positions. A "Consolidation" of buildings is underfunded, poorly planned, and drives chaos. The push to squeeze every nickel of efficiency means that there isn't always money for equipment or team building events (below the VP level).
