Pros

Education on brands, products, application and artistry. Made a couple friends along the way. Got to do makeovers and make people feel beautiful. A lot of hands on practice and experience. Occasional bonuses, (they go off of hours worked and how much you make)

Cons

Poor management with very few exceptions. A lot of managers I worked with chose their favourites and treated others like dirt. It is very hard to move up unless they favor you. A majority of the work load is put on the color cast, (people who work in the makeup world/area) you have to know every world and be able to cross sell. Other world's only need to work in their own and always pass people off to color cast. Inconsistent hours, you never know how you might get scheduled the next week. They do not like it when employees get a second job, which is necessary for many to make a livable wage. They want you to have complete availability and you have to be there on weekends, you have to work around their schedule. It's hard to get part-time partial or full-time. So it is hard to get benefits, unless you are in management. Managers don't help on the floor, they stand around and watch you do everything while holding a clipboard. Even if their is several of them on the floor, they will make a client wait for one someone in color and not try helping them at all, even for something simple. We have had many long waiting lists of people who needed help and they had to wait a long time, while managers were just gathered and gossiping. You have to act as LP, but if someone is stealing you can't mention it to them or really do anything about it. If someone does steal the fault falls on the workers and not the theif. Especially on a busy Saturday it's very hard, as everyone is doing makeovers or helping as many people as they can. They have a VERY strict attendance policy. They don't accept any excuses, you could be out sick and they will count it against you, and tell you that you should always come in anyway, "Power through it". They do not accept doctors notes. They don't like to send people home who feel sick either. "It's all in your head" a manager told coworkers. Even if you get someone to cover a shift, they still count it against you. Management the is not held to the same policy, if they are late or leave early, it's totally fine. If you are more than a few minutes late, it is counted against you the same as an absence.

Pros

Friendly, knowledgeable, supportive coworkers. Management is generally pretty good. You get to work with all the fun products and learn directly from brand reps. And the customers are there to learn about the products - and you get to talk to them about the best products. If you're excited about Sephora, go apply!

Cons

Hours vary based on the time of the year.
