Pros

There are a lot of nice people there. You can work from home. Canadian company. Pay is ok.

Cons

There is an extreme lack of diversity , especially in these 4 categories: 1. age (heavy bias against those who are 30+) 2. race (visible minorities are few and far between 3. physical abilities (I have yet to see a single person with a physical disability) 4. thought (you’re forced to either drink the kool-aid or quit). What could be an exceptional work environment gets poisoned by the very worst of the stereotypes attributed to millennials (vast majority of the employees fall into this age group). Much of Shopify’s workforce are overly fragile, self absorbed, lack basic interpersonal skills, and see opposing viewpoints as offensive. At Shopify, you will be given promotion opportunities that no other company would give you in a million years, which sounds great until you realize that that results in the majority of middle and senior management being unqualified in their roles, leaving those managers feeling highly insecure and grasping at straws for how to manage their teams. If you want sales people, hire sales people. Don’t hire customer service staff and tell them they won’t have to do sales, then make their entire performance rating based on their sales targets. You’re hiring the wrong skill sets and then blaming the employees for not succeeding. Performance recognition is nearly non-existent.

I want to genuinely thank you for your comment - I am sure it feels good to get these concerns off your chest. I want to start by saying that we are indeed serious about diversity here at Shopify. We are working hard to develop strategies around diverse hiring to ensure Shopify better reflects the outside world and the many different merchants we serve. We also appreciate that diversity of thought leads to the best problem-solving and creative thinking and as such we consciously look to hire people who bring new perspectives to our teams and a diversity of thought to the company. To achieve this we are doing things like ensuring all recruiters and managers undergo unconscious bias training, conducting inclusive leadership training for managers, conducting experiments in linking with diverse talent pools and we have also developed a network of Inclusion Connectors within our offices to further these efforts at a grassroots level. Shopify also has a dedicated inclusion department that partners with the business and HR to ensure we are constantly working towards overcoming those barriers and biases which limit top talent from diverse backgrounds in finding us here at Shopify. To address one of your other points, it is true that we are no longer a company where Tobi as the CEO can have a hand in all decisions, and this has meant the development of a much broader leads network. Wherever possible we have promoted individuals into these leadership roles but have also consciously hired individuals with leadership experience and a diversity of thought for specific roles. Shopify also provides opportunities to our leads many other companies might not, with all leads having access to a wealth of lead training resources and dedicated coaching to help them succeed in their roles. If you don’t feel your lead is supporting you, please let them know (maybe not buy buying them ‘Management for Dummies’, but one open and honest conversation delivered with genuine care might make all the difference)! Pros

Remote first culture. If you want freedom of location and a company to truly mean and support it - this is the place.

Cons

Constant change. Nothing to hold on to in this role, compensation, KPI's, tools all change every quarter.

Pros

High comp and AI forward. One of the few remote places left.

Cons

Upper management basically openly disdains the “working class”, and it’s a major jostle among the VP and Director level for currying favor with the CEO. The investment in AI tooling is smart but also the C suite majorly suffers from AI psychosis, it’s embarrassing, actually.
