Practices bate and switch hiring and discrimination against people with disabilities - Senior Associate Vertex Pharmaceuticals Employee Review

Pros

They have free breakfast and will often have free lunch with company card orders for the team or free lunch Fridays. I like they’re a WBUR sponsor and have had some successful drug launches the past couple years.

Cons

I discovered after being hired that the hiring team was interviewing their permanent hire applicants for contract roles. They would tell the chosen candidate they had hired internally, but the position was never actually an internal hire. It was a new position re-labeled as contract to move a contract worker into a permanent role in another department months ahead of any new role. Essentially they bait and switch applicants, then lied to suggest they too would be moved to full-time after the contract period. However working in the department I discovered the contractors and management were going to run out the contracts for as long as they could, which was 2+ years. Considering contractors have to pay $500+ in parking monthly..something they initially advertise as discounted or comped in their welcome package. That’s a a big dip in income unless you live in walking m-distance. I also found the environment to be discriminatory. As much as Vertex wants to be seen as promoting diversity, I witnessed a lot of active discrimination against people with ASD. Rude comments about public figures with ASD were made infront of individuals with ASD. A person with ASD was forced to be in tight and loud environments without accommodation or momentary reprieve. I saw another colleague with a mobility issue pushed pass what was fair consideration of their physical limitations. I addressed the issues with ableism to management and became an immediate target after doing so. I struggled with deciding whether to quit or not, but ultimately made it clear I did not want to continue a contract position so it would end soon. I think maybe there may be a good culture for some in the organization but there’s probably more experiences like mine getting kept quite or not shared.

Collaborative Culture — Cross‑functional teamwork is a core operating model, reducing silos and enabling faster decision‑making. Patient‑Centric Mindset — Employees often cite a strong connection between their work and tangible improvements in patient lives. Career Growth Opportunities — Clear development pathways, internal mobility, and leadership programs support long‑term career progression. Strong Leadership Reputation — Stable, respected executive leadership with a track record of disciplined strategy and long‑term vision.

Cons

Rapid Organizational Change — As Vertex grows and pivots into new modalities (gene editing, pain, rare diseases), teams may experience shifting priorities or restructuring. High Expectations for Scientific Rigor — The bar for quality and precision is extremely high, which can be challenging for those who prefer more flexible or exploratory environments. Competitive Internal Environment — With many high‑achieving scientists and leaders, some employees report a competitive atmosphere that may not suit everyone. Limited Geographic Flexibility — Many roles are tied to Boston’s Seaport HQ or specific lab locations, which can restrict remote or hybrid options depending on the function. Strict Compliance & Regulatory Demands — As with most biotech leaders, the regulatory environment can add layers of process and documentation that feel heavy to some Inspiring Mission, Fast‑Moving Culture.

Pros

The salary and benefits are great. Overall, the company is a good place to work and they are very patient focused. There can be opportunity here if you play your cards right. I enjoy working here and am generally proud.

Cons

The environment is political (toxic at times) and can be difficult to achieve results due to differing opinions and strong personalities. It takes some resilience and patience to work here. There are also many different priorities that are defocusing people and causing stress.
