Pros
Where to begin?
The culture is great, people are incredibly welcoming. My strengths are celebrated and shared, my weaknesses are fixed up with patience, encouragement and experience. I've little doubt that I will look back on what we're building here as the best years of my life.
What really stands out is the level of trust. Expensify doesn't tell me how to do my job, they just ask me to get it done, and support when needed. Nobody cares what you wear or where you are so long as you're getting your S**t Done.
People discuss the perks - work from where ever you need, travel the world, free lunch, incredible locations, the compensation etc. etc. - but for me the day to day empowerment is what really sets Expensify apart.
I've often struggled to feel like I fit in elsewhere, because I see everyone else just doing what they're told until they go home - and that's pretty demoralising.
At Expensify, however, I feel like my character is celebrated, I feel like my individuality is encouraged, and I'm supported in finding where my talents can be put to best use. I might never be able to work anywhere else!
I also went skydiving over the grand canyon with some of my colleagues, including the CEO and his wife. That was pretty awesome.
Cons
Coming from elsewhere, especially somewhere 'comfortable' and repetitive, Expensify might come as a shock. The most common advice I give to candidates is to 'just be yourself', as they are too stuck in professional formality. We'll be honest with you, you can be honest with us!
It can also feel like a bit of a whirlwind. I'm often all over the world, which is incredible fun but also very demanding.
