We appreciate that you ranked us a 5-star company and recommend Genetics Center. Given our staff size, we are more of a mid-size company, but we still have many opportunities to learn and grow through a wide variety of tasks. Open and honest communication is among the core values of Genetics Center. We try to keep a healthy environment without office politics. We also try to maintain appropriate staffing levels to keep stable employment for our employees, and even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have avoided layoffs and furloughs. Genetics Center strives to offer competitive pay and benefits. Many staff start in entry-level positions with corresponding starting pay rates, but they are increased as they learn and contribute more to the work performed. Our full-time benefits are also generous and include paid holidays (including the employee’s birthday), health and dental insurance programs (available immediately, without any waiting period), a retirement plan (available from their second year with company matching of up to 3% of their salary), and paid time off (PTO) benefits (starts to accumulate from the beginning of employment, but you just can’t start to use that until the first 90-days have passed per the State guidelines). As the “Experts in Genetics . . . Specialists in Caring,” we do truly care for our employees and the patients at Genetics Center.

Our pay is competitive and corresponds to relevant skills and experience. We also have great benefits, and Genetics Center has many people that have done well here and been with us for over 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years. We do hire entry level staff in various positions and provide on-the-job training with full pay and benefits. Many employees have appreciated that we gave them a chance when others would not. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have stayed open and busy enough that we did not lay-off or even furlough any of our staff. While other companies froze pay increases or even reduced pay, we only delayed raises a few months due to the pandemic. Our full-time employment benefits include 1. generous paid-time-off and paid holidays (including the employee’s birthday), which all employees take these (including this reviewer) and 2. health insurance premium reimbursement, group dental insurance, and a retirement plan with company matching contributions, that only a few employees for personal reasons may not take these benefits we offer, which is their choice.

Pros

-They offer CLS training for Cytogenetics -In a sense, work-life balance was good because there was no overtime work expected, since there was not that much work volume

Cons

-Not a very engaging work atmosphere -Low pay -Little room for career growth -Even though I was a “laboratory” assistant, they had me doing work for the Billing Dept which included scanning paperwork into PDFs for 8hrs...

Laboratory Assistants are not licensed so have task limitations since we are a clinical lab. Such entry-level staff assist how and where they can, until they become a State-licensed Trainee (which can take some time). To keep them employed full-time, they will assist as-needed in various tasks and departments (rather than being part-time or an unpaid intern, like in some other labs). Given our size and two State-approved training programs, our staff have many opportunities for cross training and growth. Many of our laboratory scientists first went through our Clinical Cytogenetics Scientist training program and then also completed our Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist training program, so they are now double licensed. Two of our Vice Presidents started with us in entry level positions and rose to management, as evidence of potential for career growth at Genetics Center. Our pay is competitive, especially considering all the training involved. Some other training sites charge tuition and/or are unpaid or have reduced pay during training. We train with full pay, and during a second CLS training program, we even train with their higher on-going pay rate. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have stayed open and busy enough that we did not lay off or even furlough any of our staff, which are highly-motivated given the essential and meaningful work we do here at Genetics Center since 1986.
