A company in a state of significant instability

Pros

The people. HIMSS is composed of extremely passionate individuals, each of who are extremely invested in propelling the quality of care delivery globally.

Cons

HIMSS historically has and still continues to struggle to identify more diverse revenue sources outside of its in-person events. This has only been amplified by the pandemic and their need to pivot to more digitally focused engagements, which within their current infrastructure they’re incapable of supporting. Further compounding the issue is the organization’s limited breadth of experience. The majority of HIMSS employees have been tenured for more than ten years, resulting in highly proprietary knowledge, complacency, and worse, an inability to innovate. This is ironic, considering the company’s vision promotes “reform” for digital health. HIMSS has seen a significant amount of turnover—roughly 35% of its workforce left voluntarily in 2021. And, the small handful of layoffs, in early 2022, only dealt another damaging blow to the already distressed company. This, in part, is to blame on the c-suite’s inability to collectively agree upon and transparently communicate a roadmap for its product and services and a core set of priorities for the business. While HIMSS continues to ”reimagine” itself, determine how to pay its month's overdue bills, and its employees a fair market value, ambitious job seekers should take significant pause prior to actively considering a role here.

Pros

Looks great on paper - Global nonprofit doing great work so healthcare professionals and the industry can succeed.

Cons

This is an extremely toxic workplace. Staff are overworked, juggling far too many projects, stressed, and working ridiculous hours. Management is harassing and demand unrealistic results. New staff are assigned harassment training, but it's the managers who demean, sabotage, and berate the employees every day. The pandemic caused major problems for them financially due to the elimination of live events and they're still trying to do what they did when they had money - which they don't have now. As a result, the compensation is below industry standards in all roles and no 401K match, raises or bonuses. In addition to the layoffs earlier this year, people continue to resign and run like ants to get away from the drama. Consequently, there are far too many Sr. Managers and Directors. Departments are running with 1-2 people to do the work that 8-10 used to do. Don't expect to be appreciated here.
