Founders Syndrome Beware

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

Staff generally great to work with Overall competitive salary and benefits

Cons

Founder syndrome is rampant here and impedes any good work that the organization tries to do. The founder has been Board Chair since the 90s and it does not appear he will ever give it up. His decisions affect positions even down to the lowest level. Instead of trusting the professionals who know this sector and community, he drives decisions based on a corporate mindset that rubs many internally and externally the wrong way. If you choose to work here, be forewarned that your expertise may be treasured by your immediate superiors but likely no one past that where the decisions count.

Stuck in the past with no want to dust off for the future

Pros

The direct teams you work with on a daily basis are great

Cons

Any input given is valued by direct supervisors, but that's as far as it will go. All organizational decisions are made by the founder, who has sat as Board Chair since the 90's along with three of his friends - only recently adding two new female members. They make all decisions with no input from staff, who only have the best interest in the growth of the organization. Beware of an utterly frustrating experience if you want to make tangible change within the Chicago community.

Pros

Great people doing great work for a truly important cause. The whole operation is run efficiently and working with the staff is a delight.

Cons

It's small so your impact really matters which is great if you are pulling your weight but if you're not then its a drag felt through out the office do not work here if you don't care about the cause.
