    Advice to Management

Provide intermedia leadership and support role(s) for people who do not want to continue through technical roles. There has been number of occasions where roles have been ‘created’ on the spot for individuals to keep them within the companies while other talent was let go due to those paths not being made available to them. Favouritism within the company is visible and high performing employees with support from...

I worked at Liberty IT full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some nice offices and break out areas. Good training if new.

    Cons

Unfortunately have their favorites, if you are not in the club forget it. Run like a cartel. Given my background I will get nowhere!

    Advice to Management

I would be afraid to raise anything for fear.

I worked at Liberty IT full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work can be so about the people you work with and I had some lovely colleagues to work with so that made me happy. It is a handy place to get to being central in Belfast though in the dark winter nights is not great for walking to and from.

    Cons

When you are in a while you start to see things are not quite right. Your manager might be okay but they are not being themselves. They are always guarded, fearful or felt they have to act and say certain things.

    Advice to Management

I cannot articulate accurately but there is something strange going on from the top. Everything is not as it seems and that causes people to not be themselves. That is not healthy. I also at times had little work to do and with so many of my friends leaving or thinking about it made me nervous. Do something about the work situation and let people be themselves.

I worked at Liberty IT full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I've started to write this review a few times but it's hard to put down in words what makes a company a good or a bad place to work and it can be different for everyone as the people we work with directly are so important to our own experiences. For me it was the little things like being warmly greeted on my first day at reception or reading the culture and values while I waited there ... they speak of integrity,...

    Cons

Very few but from my own experience context switching between different projects was sometimes an issue because there was so much going on.

    Advice to Management

Just keep the Liberty IT culture going! It's so important how we treat each other.

I have been working at Liberty IT full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are opportunities for 'you' to improve. This is a key aspect missed by many. If you are not happy working your legacy stack, ask yourself what can you do to modernise it? There is no mandate that you need to work with any particular technology anymore. Self-empowered teams are setup and encouraged to deliver business value in any manner they please. There are opportunities to move. Posting for a new role is...

    Cons

Remuneration - there is room for improvement. Salary is comparable to the big Belfast organisations, but more and more start-ups and remote offices from US organisations are coming and are offering a sweeter deal. This is something to consider in the pay 'benchmarking'. Bonus payments are another pain point of many; while they have been generous in the last few years they are tied in with the performance of the parent...

    Advice to Management

It is understandable that an organisation with 20+ years' experience in the field needs to adapt over time, but recent changes in structure to become a more agile software house were not communicated well and were designed with minimal input from developers on the ground. I believe there were 'focus groups' but I had no opportunity to input or feedback until the concrete had set. There are multiple initiatives in...

    Pros

Colleagues are great to work with and the offices are nice. They provide lots of free food and coffee. It is good if you are new to work and the support and training is fine. The work is okay.

    Cons

It is very controlling. I feel like I am being told how to think constantly. Everything is fine if you agree but if you do note beware. There is no feedback unless positive. It is starting to get inside my head too much!!

    Advice to Management

Less mind controlling! Source better work! Let us get on with the work we have and stop making stuff up.

    Pros

Very talented engineers in both sites (Dublin and Belfast). Lots of potential to use very exciting new tech, but you have to work towards it. Very exciting time to be in this (and the larger) company. Developers are driving the change, but not everyone has worked that out yet. Using the latest tech stacks out there and working with all the big vendors. Management are driven, but always respond to challenge - you just...

    Cons

A small percentage of staff (all grades and roles) who expect things to be handed to them (lack of commercial thinking). Very difficult trying to influence a large company (but does happen). US company are changing, but still a little slow and need to be more aggressive. Management wrap the developers in cotton wool - it's not playschool. Change in 2017 was difficult and lots of people still put out - need to move...

    Pros

The people in LIT are its biggest asset. Family/friendly feel to most teams. Lots of talented engineers with varying backgrounds and specialisms. In all my teams the team leadership has been hard working and always have the best interests of the team and developers at heart. Delivery Leads are becoming more technical and driving higher performing teams and development practices. Teams are having more say and autonomy...

    Cons

LIT has been a very stable software shop for a long time. However like most other similar technical organisations LIT and its parent organisation Liberty Mutual is embracing the impacts of 'Agile transformation'. This I think most will agree is a necessary pain. However, it has not been a positive experience for some teams and individuals this year, especially where this has been driven through changes in the parent...

    Advice to Management

Change is hard for some, so transparency in decision making is a must going forward. (With more focus on how it relates to the work we will be doing). Keep trusting in your technical leaders (engineers and leads), learn how to use them more in organisational strategy. This should be an inclusive strategy. Spend more time working with developers and leads that want to get on with change and driving the org forward...

    Pros

Reasonable benefits, central location, bright spacious offices, flexible working all the standard stuff a company needs to offer to attract & retain in demand software development skills.

    Cons

This place is attempting to transform but it is not pretty. It is quite clear that HR now run this company assisted by a few hired hands. Their remit you would expect is people but it now extends to everything. They have become experts in IT, communications, transformation and mind games! Advice to Management

Keep up the communication. I've worked in LIT for over a year and have developed great relationships both with employees in the US and in Belfast/Dublin.
