Pros

Luno gives people a lot of trust. If you identify a problem and have a good solution, you can often drive change without waiting for layers of approval. The flexibility is a major benefit. Teams are distributed globally, allowing collaboration across regions and generally supporting work-life balance. You can grow without a formal qualification. Remote Work.

Cons

Priorities sometimes shift rapidly, making it difficult for teams to build long-term momentum. Employees can feel like they're constantly adapting to new objectives. Like many tech companies over the past 4 years, Luno has gone through restructures and redundancies annually. That creates uncertainty, even for high performers. Teams are intentionally kept small. While this creates opportunities, it also means people often wear multiple hats and workloads can become heavy when colleagues leave. Not always receiving a bonus or increase.

Pros

- Good teammates and colleagues - Retirement and medical aid contributions - No micro-management, high-trust working environment - I've had good work-life balance, but very role dependant

Cons

- We have started going through "restructures" and retrenchments on a near-annual basis now. This used to be a company that offered long-term job security, but that is not the reality any more. I've lost all faith in our ability to succeed long term. - The company strategy has been through several pivots, and none of our big bets seem to ever pay off as well as expected. When these strategies fail, we blame bad economic and market conditions rather than taking proper accountability. - The business is completely vulnerable to crypto market movements (which are volatile) despite spending many years trying and failing to become sustainable regardless of price movements. - We underestimate our competitors, when we should be seriously studying how even some smaller-sized companies have managed provide larger product offerings. - We do not take customer feedback seriously. We ship features we think customers will want while failing to address common recurring complaints. - Despite 3-ish consecutive years of retrenchments, strategies that haven't paid off, lacklustre product delivery, reverse growth... the Exec team has remained largely unchanged since 2023. They earn C-Suite salaries in the UK (a region we no longer operate in), while the rest of the company (mainly South African and Malaysian) pinches pennies and says goodbye to friends.
