Pros

Flexible working, easy to work from home. You can leave work at the door at the end of the day.

Cons

No progression. Poor training. Lack of management skills. Information about the company's ongoing development and operations are never filtered down to the entry level staff, leaving production largely unaware of how the material is used. Staff feel under-appreciated.

Hi, Thank you for your review. We’re sorry if you feel the communication between sales and content was lacking during your employment. The content team leaders in our Reading office currently have monthly meetings with sales to pass information on to their teams. In addition to this there are weekly sales alerts to keep everyone updated as well as training on sales processes and products. We are also working on improving the rewarding schemes in the company and really want to work on making our staff feel appreciated and valued for the work that they do. If you have some ideas on how we could improve in these areas, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me directly. Kind Regards, Krista Tirkkonen CHRO

Pros

Working from home available to most people, which is useful. Convenient location.

Cons

Despite what they may tell you at interview, there is absolutely no progression available for language graduates joining the production team at M-Brain. "Progress" at M-Brain effectively means you get given more work to do, but continue to be expected to churn out just as many articles without any extra pay or any sort of praise/thanks/respect. The management (of production at least) is the most unprofessional environment I have ever been exposed to. The network of backstabbing, playground bullying and lack of transparency negatively impacts on almost every member of staff. Team leaders are permitted to make up their own arbitrary rules and apply them unevenly within their teams. Passive-aggressive emails and thinly veiled threats seem to be favoured over genuine open discussion. Senior management make all the right noises when concerns are raised but never follow through and become hostile when you draw their attention to it. Even the most constructive of comments surrounding the way the company works are met with ignorance and contempt. Because of this, what should be a relatively interesting and rewarding job becomes a daily battle of office politics, treading on eggshells and wondering who's turn it will be next to be the villain of the moment. Managers and team leaders have regularly been known to call unscheduled meetings designed to put you on the spot. Team leaders are also regularly known to spend hours badmouthing employees to one another, rather than taking steps to improve workflows and the working environment. The pay rate is appalling for the location and skill level required, particularly when you consider that pay rises are virtually non-existent.

Pros

Easy working hours. Low stress. Long lunch hour.

Cons

Very low pay. There are close to no career progression opportunities. Management lacking basic skills. Very little communication inside the company. No training provided by company. Too little learning as work is too repetitive.

Hi, Thank you for your valuable feedback. We acknowledge that we have challenges with career development within the company. The media reporting side of the business, which is our main operation at the Reading office, is quite a small team which naturally limits progression. However, there have been several promotions within production recently, and also promotions to different roles within our sales and advisory teams. We actively look to fill any vacancies within the company rather than recruiting outside; and everyone in the production department began work as a junior analyst. We have made a conscious decision to use the global intranet as our company wide communication channel but it seems that some of our country offices are not used to this idea and don’t read the intranet very often. We have found that the bigger the company grows the more challenging it is to communicate via direct email messages to correct groups and since all employees have access to the intranet, we find that it is the most effective forum for internal communication. We’re very sorry if you feel that no training is provided. For years now, we have endeavoured to offer training to all of our staff and training being one of the foundations of our strategy, our targets are set and competences are built to reflect this. In the Reading office team leaders hold regular reviews with staff regarding their training and development. If you feel that there is a problem with receiving training, the first step is to take it up with your manager. In fact, we have recently launched a system for HR grievances in our Reading office and based on the experience we have in Reading we may roll it out globally. What comes to management posing as employees - we have strict rules to management about posting on Glassdoor. They must state that they are part of the management if they wish to post something on public forums about the company. Often, we get feedback from staff that they have seen negative comments about the company and feel bad about it. In these situations, the managers have said that they are welcome to post their positive feedback on the website and a lot of employees have done just that. If you would like to discuss your concerns in person, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Kind regards, Krista Tirkkonen CHRO
