Pros

Amazing science, large number of extremely bright and entertaining colleagues, lots of good food in the fridge. Some team leads are awesome.

Cons

Playing Russian roulette with your career and your sanity by being part of something akin to a circus, with intentionally destructive "management" behaviours and unsteady direction. As a new starter, your life expectancy in this firing range will be about a year, sometimes much less. Unless you fancy extreme sports with self-destructive overtones, consider chosing another employer or you will find yourself in a cycle of pathological lying targeting employees, customers and possibly investors too. Denial culture is rife. "Company culture" is used as a codename for hunting any signs of non-conformance with radical notions leaning on the far side of the ideological spectrum, in an uncanny reminder of contemporary UK politics. In summary, even in light of the positive aspects (there are many and are not limited to the free food), the risk/benefit ratio is strikingly poor. If you do get lucky, the experience will prove very rewarding, always at a high cost.

Pros

Few and far between, to be honest, I can't think of any.

Cons

Cult-like leader and followers Senior management is the blind leading the blind just riding around the abyss congratulating themselves for frankly achieving nothing. Major politics - hard to get anything done and if you manage to get it done don't expect a thank you, a bonus or any sort of gratitude. Mostly nut jobs at the helm with no experience in leading. People don't take many things seriously here, it's pretty much a holiday camp for the reserve teams of football. Swan about do what you want with unlimited holiday that you are frowned upon for using and come and go whenever you fancy throughout the day.

Pros

Many colleagues are engaged, motivated and extremely collaborative. You will learn a lot and work on some interesting challenges. Many of the line managers are genuinely fantastic people and people are generally supportive.

Cons

The company culture uses direct and honest communication as a mask for belittling, undermining and being "right" in place of constructive criticism, normally directed from upper management. Strategic direction is vague and failure to figure out the "correct" direction results in pretty terrible reactions. Work-life balance is non-existent. It feels as though they took all of the worst parts of academic culture and decided that made the ideal management method. Favouritism and bullying is common place, even if you try and avoid it.
