Don't Believe The Hype

Pros

Some of the staff are very talented and committed professionals.

Cons

I joined the company thinking that, having been rated as one of the top employers in the area, that it would be a good fit (I can only guess that the rating was biased by some personal connections to the company). I could not be more wrong. While every company has is issues and challenges, PixelMEDIA issues are both numerous and of great magnitude. The real problem begins with the executive leadership, if you can even call it that. The entire focus is on billing hours at the expense of both quality and the customer. This singular focus on billing hours (over anything else) leads to poor results for its clients: late, over budget and lacking quality. In any other market, this company would be struggling. This is the culture - don't be tempted by tales of bonuses, great benefits or working for a cool agency - companies that have to talk about their culture really don't have a culture. A video games, pool table, snacks and once a year holiday party doesn't make up for an unfriendly and unfocused work environment. Underneath the senior team are a layer of unprofessional 'directors' that have little managerial or leadership experience yet have the egos that can fill Gillette Stadium. The overall attitude is that they are too 'cool' or 'hip'. This middle 'management' layer, lacking in any substantive experience outside of the company thinks they are doing well but their approach only alienates people on the 'team'. If you shut up and follow directions, you'll be fine, for those hoping for an innovative company, this is not it. The compensation plan and package is well below industry standards and while the benefits package is acceptable (e.g. on par with similar sized companies), the leadership thinks that it is top shelf. Promises of annual bonuses that go undelivered adds insult to injury.

Pros

Fantastic break room with video games and a pool table. Only use them in off-hours though, after all, you want to meet your quota of 'billable hours'. Some great employees - There are some VERY talented people there. Some good, unique benefits - Though they are no longer as comprehensive and amazing as some slightly older online articles and award would have you believe, there are still some good ones - discounts on clients' products, free gym membership and bicycle loaners to name a couple. The prestige of working for PixelMEDIA - since not many people know what really goes on inside the ivory tower, many will still look at you in awe and say "wow, you work for PixelMEDIA? I hear it's REALLY hard to get in there - you must know your stuff"

Cons

Over-abundance of egos - mostly from the top down. PixelMEDIA is certainly not the best small business to work for in NH (my current employer would actually beat them out in heartbeat) and definitely doesn't put out the top-notch, innovative, cutting edge work they think they do. Work quotas - everybody has to make sure every minute of their time is logged and woe to you if you don't meet the required 80% billable hours. Even if you are in sales or marketing - I ask you, how are the people getting new business supposed to be 80% billable to existing projects? Client churn - Once the owners or key stakeholders get bored with a client or feel the client is getting slightly high-maintenance, they write them off and shift focus to whatever new client is in the building, hoping the old client will just 'go away'. Unfriendly environment - not that anybody is mean or malicious, but nobody smiles when you pass them in the hall, says hello at the beginning of the day, or asks how your weekend was. Again, that would cut too much into the billable hours quota. Poor handling of employment termination - this was what pushed this review from a 3-star 'ok' review to a 2-star 'dissatisfied' review. Do not ever leave PixelMEDIA for another agency job in the NH Seacoast area. I cannot go into too much detail while remaining anonymous, but I can name 5 other ex-employees that had similar experiences when leaving.

Stressful work environment

Pros

The variety and work experience was great to be a part of.

Cons

Some of my immediate co-workers and supervisors were great to work with. However, I generally felt disrespected by many of the other team members. Most people there are pretty cut-throat and negative towards each other. Everyone seemed to be on edge. Fighting among the staff was almost a daily occurrence. I felt this attitude/culture stemmed from leadership. Erik was always really nice and respectful to me. However, I never really worked closely with him. Thomas Obrey was the root of the problem to me. He was generally condescending to his employees and talked negatively behind people's back. I saw how disrespectful he treated some of the clients which made me feel extremely uncomfortable. He belittled me on numerous occasions and generally made me feel dumb. I lost count of how many times he treated other employees the same way. This behavior caused so much stress among the staff which created a toxic work environment. It was physically and emotionally painful to work there having been exposed to that environment day after day.
