Pros

You can negotiate a good salary given the limited responsibilities you have in doing mainly research activities. Management positions have a high salary with not much to do and with no accountability: when things get a bit difficult the famous "blame culture" described in other reviews allows utterly incompetent managers to blame others for their wrong decisions. Note also that when you try to make managers change their mind with purely objective technical considerations, you are welcomed with bullying, politics, and worst of all also with the blame for the wrong decisions you warned them about...

Cons

They promised very interesting work, however this revealed to be a big lie. If you read the website and the articles on the media it appeared RE was very close to test an innovative aero-engine (reason why many engineers joined the company some years ago). Note job interviews were conducted passing this very message, and to reinforce it RE received many tens of millions of funding so it meant we were doing something real, right? Wrong. You may ask how this big sum of money disappeared. A good portion was completely wasted, in a very efficient fashion. Suddenly however the company had no money and the main project which lasted for the previous 4 years and employed more than half of the company stopped. Obviously this sparked a mass resignation. To understand what I am talking about, consider that some newspapers describe RE as a "hypersonic propulsion company". Other goes as far as saying it is a "hypersonic aircraft manufacturer". And recently this hypersonic aircraft that can cover London-Sydney in only 4 hours has also low-carbon emissions! You can also find seminars and presentations saying that the "giant" spaceplane designed by RE is a serious project and could be used to colonize the solar system. Looking to the bright side all these claims managed to attract funding by unaware investors, and now RE is finally focusing on somewhat more realistic projects. However its approach to engineering, and to its personnel would need to improve significantly to get any result in the real world.

Pros

If you're a former Rolls-Royce employee then you can come here and work with all your old pals. You'll fit right in, no matter what your ability. There are always jobs available here. We can't retain good people. Those who can, leave. To address this we've implemented a revolving door retention strategy. Apply online today...

Cons

So, you want to be a rocket scientist? AVOID REACTION! Skylon is just a vehicle for attracting talent, and SABRE just an engine for sucking in taxpayer funding. We aren't even working on SABRE anymore (because we've finally figured out it will never work, oh, and the money ran out).

Salaries are a mess across the board. Underpaid engineers. Project management style is 'blame culture'. Senior management are absolutely clueless. Lack of engineering seniority, most engineers have left.
