Pros

If you like crafting, the work [mostly] enjoyable

Cons

Unhealthy leadership dynamics. No transparency. Leadership frames work environment as “family”, but consistently operates with deception, emotional manipulation, and ultimately self-service. Wildly confusing for employees. Defensive and/or unreceptive to constructive criticism and employee feedback. Despite employee feedback, these unhealthy patterns have continued for 8+ years. Historically, men are paid higher rates than women working the same position and workload. HR reports not taken seriously.

Awful Upper Management

Pros

I love the coworkers in my area. They are some of the most hardworking people I know.

Cons

1. CEO said during our weekly meeting right before peak season that "We're doing a Christmas bonus this year which we've done every year, but don't HAVE to!" Why did you say it like that, as if you haven't built your entire life off of your employee's underpaid labor. 2. CEO's wife worked in production for as long as I had been here up until late 2023. During her time at RedTree, she made multiple inappropriate comments, ranging from racism, to transphobia, to weird sexual comments. Any time it was brought up to upper management, it was brushed under the rug, and it was said there was nothing they could do. She would also try to tell all of the employees that RedTree was a "family," and that we should see her "as an equal" despite the INSANE power dynamic at play there. 3. Management plays favorites. Some people are allowed to miss however much work they would like to, while others are required to use PTO days for time off and bring doctors notes. There is no precedent in this company, it's all about who you're close with in management. 4. Despite having a glowing annual review, I didn't even get a dollar raise. So they're saying that someone who is so valuable to them, has done excellent work over the past year, someone who they're so excited to continue to work with in the future is only worth an 85 cent raise? How nice. 5. Constantly spending company money on things to "boost morale" when we have stated multiple times that we would rather not do that and get paid more. I don't want a pizza party, I want a livable wage. 6. Today we had bad weather, and they posted an updated winter weather policy, which stated that at RedTree would open at 11:30am if JCPS were closed for the day. Tonight, JCPS announced they are going to close for tomorrow. They proceeded to post in Slack that, "We're going to open at 8:30 tomorrow since the roads today weren't too bad." What was the point of the winter weather policy update?

Pros

The production team are some of the hardest-working and kindest people I’ve ever met. The company makes very nice products.

Cons

The CEO was encouraged to solicit feedback from team members on their job satisfaction. He refused, stating it “would open a can of worms.” He was assured it would feel that way due to long-unaddressed issues, but once gathering feedback and making changes was built into a routine, it would not be so overwhelming. The feedback was not received well and routine job satisfaction surveys were not put in place. When addressing the overall communication structure and health of the company, the CEO stated that he believed there was no way to grade the communication skill of employees because “everyone is bad at communicating.” When employees become overworked or frustrated with working conditions, long hours at peak season, etc., the company will reward the team with a bit of time to relax or enjoy a special treat, or maybe even bump the pay. These are all great things that I encourage. The problem is that many of the issues that cause people to reach levels of frustration, i.e. equipment breaking, disproportionate workloads between team members, lacking managerial direction, etc. often do not get properly addressed and fixed. Due to this, the fun days become a way to keep people just content enough to not push back without having to make the necessary changes for the company and team to truly thrive.
