Pros

The only pros really is the idea of being able to help people who are in need of special attention/care. With this job, you are able to reach out to these people who are struggling functioning in the society. SBHS has a clear and specific program for the patients and staff follow these strictly.

Cons

Patients are sometimes aggressive so good reflex is a MUST HAVE. Staffing wise - I've worked on days when we didn't have enough staff in the unit. That really puts your safety at risk, as well as the patients'. Also, we've had patients who'd been admitted multiple times. Some of these kids do not belong in this hospital. They need special treatment and putting them with the rest of the patients gives the unit an unsafe environment. Pay rate - rate is low for how demanding the job is. BHTs do more physical and mental work for these patients

Pros

great training experience, there are always gems among the staff

Cons

php and iop staffed are overworked and underpaid; administration micromanages without building trust with employees who are afraid of being fired, or shamed. For a program that is "trauma informed" there is a high level of denial on the part of the administration regarding the need for staff support in processing the daily trauma of working in mental health and the consequent impact on the quality of patient treatment. Staff retainment is poor.

Pros

With the exception of the upper level management, the rest of the staff is supportive, level headed, and goal oriented. The experience you gain there is intense, and you have to learn quick.

Cons

It is a "sink or swim" environment, and unfortunately there are not enough instructions or resources to help the staff members to swim. The upper level management is extremely out of touch with their lower level workers such as BHT's, and nurses. The upper level management does not deal with constructive criticism well, and seem to "take it out" on their workers. I have personally seen the CEO side with a patient (who was in the wrong) over the Nurse who was in charge of the unit (who was in the right). The starting pay of BHT's is ridiculously low, especially when compared to the lack of support and safety that SBHS provides.
