Pros
It is possible to negotiate a good salary here, if you sell you soul to the devil (read sign a five-year contract like I did in good faith), but all said, it really isn't worth the aggravation and all the other cons I will mention. Having said that, there was a very tasty dumpling shop next door. Unfortunately, you're not allowed to leave the school premises at lunch time, so you have to climb over a rather tall metal fence. The only other alternative was the abysmal school canteen with the watered down everything and dirty facilities. Some of the local Chinese teachers were sweet and saw I never ate any of the canteen food and asked if I was okay. How to respectfully explain the reason why?
Cons
I've always been a believer in the adage, "If you don't have anything nice to say, then...." In contrast, I feel I am doing a public service by warning others about working at this school as an English teacher. I will never forget the first time I stepped into the "staff room" filled with the other foreign English teachers. They all warned me that I would hate working there and recounted their own and other former teacher anecdotes about all the bad experiences they had encountered working there, namely with management, and more precisely the owner. Me, the eternal optimist, and not wanting to go back to my previous employer out of embarrassment, decided I would make the most of it. There was a lot of bad blood with the local teachers who resented being paid a fraction of most of the inexperienced English teachers, and some of them went out of their way to cause teachers problems. My co-teacher one time binned my wall decoration that I had sweated blood and tears making for my children so they would have something didactic and engaging to look at. It was my first kindergarten teaching job and it was a baptism of fire. I was given a class of 25 children - all adorable angels - but all had been given to me by previous teachers; I found out most of my children had been considered by their previous teacher as "active in class" which no teacher wants to hear. My co-teacher made my life a misery and ridiculed me to the classroom assistant in Chinese and complained about me to the owner. The owner never asked for my feedback about what happened. Luckily, said teacher left after two parents complained about their children being locked in the bathroom during their sleep time because they did not go to sleep when she asked them to. She really was a piece of work. Luckily, I forwarded all the mean and unhelpful messages she sent me to the headmistress and owner's wife who were both really sympathetic. That along with the parents complaints meant that she was let go of. Unfortunately, neither of the two Chinese teachers that followed could cope with the management or children and although I only stayed for less than 3 months due to personal issues I outlasted 3 of them. Finally, when it comes to leaving, either at the end of your contract or before - on good or less than good terms - the owner will make it very difficult for you and it will be difficult for you to obtain your Work Release or Recommendation Letter.
