Pros

literally can't think of one thing

Cons

This job was the worst I've ever had. I dont even know where to begin. It's been 2 years since I left and I'm still quite frankly not over the way I was treated there. Firstly they pay minimum wage, or maybe slightly above, yet in order to get the job you must have a degree. For a highly skilled position that requires so much patience and dedication, you're paid CRUMBS. Also don't discuss your pay with your colleagues, you'll get massively berated for that. You're constantly watched and micromanaged - they have CCTV in the workshops that they literally have on a big screen in the office which is so weird. You have to put phones off or on silent in a locked box during the day. If anyone's trying to get hold of you, they won't. I had health problems and my manager was always really weird about me taking doctors calls. On that topic, your mental health will NOT be taken seriously. I was told to try taking a berocca to help with my clinical depression, and "just get stuck into work to distract yourself". I was severely depressed working there and felt so alone. They made me move so that I was working on an entire department completely alone, and even then I had my manager on my back because I wasn't making things fast enough, ON MY OWN!? The managers are not trained AT ALL. They're just friends with the higher ups or been there a while so just happened to become managers when the company grew, not because they're actually good at it. If you step out of line (aka being a human being and not a workshop robot) you will be ridiculed, talked about behind your back, given the silent treatment and quite frankly bullied. I've never been around such nasty characters in my life. That brings me on to my next topic, if you call anyone out for bigotry in the workplace you will be gaslighted. Someone in the dispatches team said the N WORD at work, I called the person out at the time and then reported it to the managers. They excused the behaviour, REPEATED THE SLUR MULTIPLE TIMES during the meetings, and then eventually had to bring HR in from Hereford to have a conversation with the entire team about "appropriate workplace discussions" and essentially said that "you won't agree on everything, people will all have different opinions" then went on to compare discussing racial issues in the workplace to discussing SALARY? Not exactly comparable. It's a very unsafe place to work, shoddy equipment, no health and safety practises in place. I worked during the pandemic and NONE of the managers took it seriously. They were trotting about with their masks under their noses, acting like it was some kind of big joke. Not a good look. Absolutely no perks to the job. Favouritism is rife. Really backstabby atmosphere, managers manipulating people against each other. Not a creative job at all, just a great big sausage factory and a bad excuse for one. Its taken me a long time to build my confidence back up after nearly a year of constant belittling and manipulation. Avoid like the plague, avoid like you've never avoided before.

Pros

None. It’s all phoney Whatever you do, don’t just take a job here after graduating because it looks like a dream job.

Cons

The turn around of staff is insane, they lure fresh graduates in with ‘great opportunities’ and these poor people up and move their lives, a bit like entrapment. Struggling for money and some form of approval. It’s actually really sad and it’s even more sad that management are trying to combat reviews on this site, kind of embarrassing. When the management themselves don’t have any training, they just get hired for knowing people within the company basically. You will only ever be in the good books here, if you allow yourself to be taken advantage of or become a suck up. Obviously people sucking up to try and move up the food chain to earn a few more scraps, don’t really blame them. Not even to mention the worst parts, themes of racism and homophobia. Just truly vile.

Pros

Unfortunately, I do not have one good thing to say about this place.

Cons

Moved to the local area for this position straight from university and what a mistake. I would not recommend any media makeup, wigs or prosthetics specialists - experienced or not - to apply or take a job with Simbodies. During job application and interview stages the image painted was of “one big happy family”. This was not the case. More like one big toxic family. In beginnings stages of application process, management state that all staff are super friendly and will go the extra mile to help you out with travel etc. Again, this was never the case. Unfortunately, most of the staff are so burnt out from management’s immaturity and lack of organisation skills, the thought of offering to take others home was just too much. A completely “doggy dog” business where employees are mistreated and devalued. Coercing new employees in with half truths and quite frankly being utterly fake on trial shifts because the company cannot retain staff. It’s evident management never considered if they treated staff appropriately, people would not leave. Therefore they wouldn’t have to waste time training new staff over and over. Upon arrival, I was expecting the job to be brutal at points. All prosthetics undergrads are warned and prepared, in their final years of university, about how tough the industry can be. However, this company was pure disorganisation, lack of functional management and zero respectful interpersonal skills. Most new staff move from out of county for this role - with big excitement for their career. Quickly they become crushed when discovering the reality of the environment. There were multiple occasions where new staff would not say anything all week, for months at a time. Additionally, multiple occasions where staff were blamed for lacking time targets because of “talking” - rather than management accepting their lack of organisation. It was obvious that management took on too much than they could handle. Hence, staff were often told they should not speak to each other in the workshop. This was/is isolating and therefore was/is a critical mental health risk for all employees. Unfortunately, that was never taken seriously either. Employees who were struggling or unhappy were told to “have a berocca” or “go for a walk” instead of being offered professional mental health support. If support was offered employees were often too scared to voice it, in fear of being perceived as “problematic” by management. Alternatively, they couldn’t be bothered with the hassle. I recall many employees struggling to get essential doctors appointments or have time off for medical reasoning because management assumed that people were lying in all cases. Most supervisors had a complete lack of empathy for their workers. Expecting people in workshop assistant roles to take responsibilities that was not included in the applied job description - such as training new staff. These members of staff were not paid accordingly for this extra responsibility nor warned of these expectations prior to accepting the role. Any staff making suggestions or complaints - in attempt to help or improve aspects of the company - essentially got black listed by management. Furthermore, anyone with a slight personality or opinion was painted by management as “problematic”. I recall multiple occasions of specific members of staff being ignored by management because management weren’t happy with them. Management acted like children in a school playground. Whispering in the workshop, about staff, to one another in the corner. Additionally, passing gossip around the workshop. Most disgracefully, multiple occasions of racism, homophobia and just general ignorance to social etiquette - that are the norms in 2024. One example, was assuming because someone’s skin colour was brown that they would have an arranged marriage??? Completely out of touch. Overall, I would NEVER recommend working at Simbodies to anyone from a media makeup background. This is the place where passion is crushed and authenticity is frowned upon. Not worth the expense. Not worth the time. Not worth the energy. I would suggest to find literally anything else.
