Pros

Benefits. Four more words?! Benefits.

Cons

I spent six years here and thought that it might be useful to add my own observations now that their HR team seem determined to play down the recent truthful reviews by a concerted effort. Without question, one of the most ruthless companies I've ever worked with when it comes to culling staff. Stack is now profit before people business. Which doesn't matter if they get sold off in a few years time. The risk here is that they are leaving a legacy of people who worked hard to create what they have. Only to then sack them all off because their senior managers don't have the ability to even focus for two minutes on the culture. Stack is lucky enough to benefit from a huge community of developers. They are now all in their private version of the platform having recently shut down the Talent (jobs) part of the business. A few problems with this: A. Senior management is woeful. Literally a sales 'leader' treating reps like eight year old school kids by creating an environment based on fear rather than support. B. Marketing telling sales people how to sell. Despite never having sold the product. Enough said. C. Ditching reps who generated millions in revenue is short sighted to say the least. Whether they like it or not they need people who can sell. It's perhaps indicative of the leadership team they have in place that they think this is the right call. Sack people off. Hire new people. Burn them out. Rinse and repeat.

We appreciate your feedback. We take all reviews seriously as we strive to continually improve our programs and policies to better support our colleagues. We acknowledge that changes in business direction are difficult, however we have been able to transition some of the employees impacted into other open positions, while supporting others through their transition back into the workforce through reimbursement for professional resume writing and more. We’re always striving to improve and deepen our commitment to DEIB that has a real impact on our company culture, community, and industry at large. This year that included a million dollar budget for DEI initiatives, hiring a director of DEIB, partnerships, and establishing a DEI council with representatives across our various affinity groups.

Pros

Used to be great place to work and amazing benefits, but now even these are not enough

Cons

Management gets worse and worse every time someone new gets hired into the Leadership team, have now just "furloughed" and terminated 15% of staff which included some illegal actions like terminating an employee in the German office being 5 months pregnant and furloughing another in the London office being on maternity leave but keeping the male colleague in the same position. Being pushed around for weeks after the decision was made and I've never seen any process being handled so disrespectfully and incompetently. American style leadership with no competence or sensitivity for regional nuances and differences in culture. Staff turnover has increased faster in the last 3 years than the spread of the Corona virus in the last 3 months and its a shame having an idea that Stack Overflow used to represent and value being destroyed step by step by such poor employment practices and code of conduct.

Thank you for your feedback. We understand that you are frustrated and hope that you’ll take the time to continue this conversation with your manager, Senior Leadership Team leader, your HRBP and the People Team in general, or through Officevibe. The company has been evolving over the last 18 months, before we were struck by the COVID pandemic, which triggered some accelerated change. We were negatively impacted by COVID and needed to take action to be fiscally responsible by reducing headcount. We recognize that there will be business decisions that are difficult to understand, without having been involved in the decision making process. However, we are confident that the leadership team has acted with integrity and transparency through our need to reduce headcount, and have worked hard to balance the needs of our staff with the realities of our business. We hope that in time - through continued conversations - that we can work to rebuild your trust. The door is open and again, we thank you for your feedback.

Pros

Really good benefits, great offices and fun coworkers

Cons

I'll start from the top. The CEO's head is so big I'm not sure how he fits it in the shower every morning. I used to think he genuinely cared about the people who work for him but it's clear that isn't the case. All he cares about is own "fame" and success. He allows the misogynistic tyranny of the executives below him to continue without stepping in and putting a stop to it. He should have stepped down years ago but instead layed off 30% of the company and blamed others for his mistakes. The company continues to fire or push out strong leaders (mostly female) for little or no reason, they just offer compensation to them to push it under the carpet. They go so far as to have fake executives (either non-executives or people who have nothing to do with the company anymore) on their website to mask the fact that the entire leadership team is male. The executive team is a boys club made up of either Ivy league alum or country club pals that plot against those they don't like, encourage/scare others to speak up against them and then systematically eliminate them. It's almost a monthly occurrence. The vast majority of the company is simply waiting for someone to acquire them or for Stack to go public and then there will be a mass exodus. In fact, on any given day you will hear one conversation or another on that subject and employees expressing how they just want it to be over. It's not fun anymore, the main product is tired and doesn't work and they move so slowly in getting any new products up and running that they lose any excitement they had when announcing it. There isn't one proactive mind among the decision makers, everyone just waits for a problem and then reacts to it when it's too late and usually in the wrong way. Those who are proactive or try to do things differently are considered a problem. Unless you are a male and someone who doesn't want to ever express any of your own ideas, I'd avoid this company.
