Better on outside than inside

Pros

Great mission, ability to work remotely, ability to travel.

Cons

Poorly run: HR is amateurish at best, President is unprofessional, fickle, intrusive, and untrustworthy of staff. The mediocre and attention seeking survive, while professional and ethical staff have left in droves over the past few years (if you are seeking a job here, note the high staff turnover). The level of unprofessional behaviour is staggering, and unethical behaviour is rampant in the leadership. If you create boundaries, you risk losing her favor. When I was hired, I asked about ongoing professional training and was told by HR that those were offered as "favors" - ie, if you behave, you are allowed to go. Staff is constantly told "we are a family" which is the non-profit world is code for "we will not pay you much and we will ask much in return." This also sets one up for a parent-child relationship with the organization as opposed to adult to adult.

Pros

The mission of serving military families in their greatest hour of need is rewarding and most of the "hands on" staff is passionate about their work

Cons

TAPS President spends tens of thousands of dollars on whimsical projects that have little to zero mission impact, but takes from funding that has been allocated for survivor resources. Board of Directors should be alarmed! HR is unresponsive to staff communications, rash and unpleasantly demeaned in front of volunteers and guests, some department directors are unable to manage their workload and rarely respond to staff requests for support / guidance. There is no standardized reporting for complaints, requests, nor purchase supply chain within the organization. Employees are expected to be available 24/7 for non-essential work and are exploited for their experiences if it serves to promote the president.

High turnover, no direction, at times toxic

Pros

Had the opportunity to be involved in and create a number of exciting projects. Lots of opportunities to travel or be involved in unique DC area events

Cons

The President creates a very hostile work environment - is enamored by new things and employees, but then 6 months later those same people and projects are thrown out. Watched her verbally abuse people, lie to other employees about their coworkers, and take away responsibilities until the employee would quit. Was only there under 2 years and saw ~ 40% of my DC coworkers quit during that time. Additionally, it is expected that this work IS your life. Weekend conferences would mean working 24/7, then back to the office Monday morning. The later you stay in the office, the better.
