Pros

"Wellness room" in the Soho office complete with yoga mats and a bookshelf containing Peter Thiel's memoir.

Cons

This startup has now laid off all but a few remaining employees. This was the most toxic and disorganized place I've ever worked. I felt like I was living in an episode of Black Mirror or something. When something objectively bad would happen -- mass layoffs, missed business objectives, lost revenue, website archive deleted forever, etc -- everyone I spoke to would say what a great opportunity this was. Sorry, what?? CEO is (or, more accurately, was) surrounded by "yes men." Leaders of various departments had little to no experience in what they were in charge of doing. The Org scaled without first achieving product-market fit. It's running out of money, and after a few major waves of layoffs (in which laid off employees were offered a meager one-month's severance pay), it's basically no longer operating.

Pros

Nice office space w/ fairly flexible work from home/work from office policies, opportunity for international travel (offices in NYC and Copenhagen), mission-driven colleagues who seem to believe in what they're building

Cons

Constantly shifting goalposts and priorities (you can argue this is to be expected at a startup but it was a frustration for sure); poorly executed layoffs without good communication or a decent severance package; CEO who surrounds himself with yes men instead of doing what's best for the business; frivolous spending in areas that don't matter.

The Org Response

Thank you for taking the time to write The Org a review. It is important for us to hear what we are doing well and where we need to improve. One of our core values is “Learn Out Loud,” so I appreciate the opportunity to be transparent about our imperfections and how we are making progress. I, too, love the items you mentioned such as our mission-driven colleagues, our beautiful office spaces in New York City and Copenhagen, and the opportunities for international travel. When I speak to current Orgonauts, these all top the list of “pros” - along with a high degree of autonomy and on-the-job learning and growth opportunities. That said, we are not used to 2-star reviews, and I am not happy that your experience working at The Org was unsatisfactory. As you mention, working at an early-stage startup often comes with shifting priorities, something we try to make clear at various points throughout the talent lifecycle. The rest of your feedback touches on leadership communication and decision-making, something that’s been a core focus for the past several months. We’ve incorporated feedback from current and former employees on this topic, and have worked to become even more transparent around strategy, finances, and decision-making. In fact, on our most recent company-wide survey, the statement “The leaders at The Org keep people informed about what is happening” saw the largest jump in positive sentiment, with 90% of the company agreeing. We’re not perfect, but we’re making progress. Thank you again for your review. If you’d like to reach out to me directly, I would gladly discuss these and any other concerns you may have. -- Nate Silver, Head of People & Culture

Pros

People are nice Interesting business model

Cons

The company is highly unorganized. They increased headcount without forecasting profit, was unable to keep people employed due to this. I was let go after less than three months because of poor budget planning. The salary was not comparable to industry standard and workload was high.
