I should have seen the red flag when my interviewing manager told me to never trust anyone or be friends with fellow employees “because people talk”.
On top of that was the fact that I was told that I would need to take special classes to learn to use their skincare line, and that after that I would get a raise and be moved into doing facials.
That did NOT happen. They threw me into a facial with lout the training or the raise. I am capable of a facial but using products that I had no idea about or how to use them was extremely nerve wracking and just unfair to the client. I hoped she liked the facial.
Along with this I was constantly put to do mani pedis which I am licensed for but not the most skilled (shaky hands from doing massage) and so I had numerous customer complaints. I told them many times that I am first and foremost a massage therapist. They didn’t listen and they continued giving me nails and I tried my best but it simply was not my expertise.
Supplies were to be bought yourself and the supply closet was an absolute atrocious mess. Massage rooms were very plain and sheets were stained.
The wax room was so dim there is no way you could properly wax someone and the wax they used turned brittle and very painful to remove. They also didn’t have proper sticks for the waxing services which is EXTREMELY dangerous because I saw an employee use scissors to cut larger sticks into smaller ones for brows-THAT IS A SAFTEY HAZARD TO THE SKIN UNDER THE BROW.
I had 12 hour work days without a lunch break. Sometimes services would run over into my lunch or completely over my lunch and I would go the rest of the day hungry. I had days where I would see numerous co workers being sent home early when they didn’t have anyone in their books, yet when I was completely dead I was put to do janitorial work. I couldn’t work in such a toxic and disorganized environment anymore.
