Pros

Some truly wonderful and very smart people work here. Unlimited PTO (if able to take the time off) and lunch budget are both nice.

Cons

Beware if you are considering joining this company. They tout a fast paced start-up culture where you can make a big impact. But loads of red tape and approval steps slow or halt many great ideas. Company is very unorganized and chaotic, but leaders in NY are blind to it since they think they are always the smartest ones in the room. However, they are all inexperienced and unwilling to listen and learn from others that have the industry experience. The Arizona office would take big steps forward, and then direction from the NY office would take us 10 steps back again. Decisions made by NY leaders rarely (if ever) had the employees well-being in mind. But they’d try to cover up and bury their lack of caring, empathy, or integrity with more unnecessary processes and procedures. Unrealistic workloads and work-life balance is a huge issue- and the NY leaders seemed to wear their long hours like a badge of honor and expect it from all. In addition, the majority of the pay ranges and benefits are below market/competition. My time at Valon was a low point in my career, which was disappointing as I had high hopes at the beginning. Everyone that I know that has left Valon is much happier now

Pros

Some of the smartest most eager talent outside of the executive team I've ever had the joy of working around. The ingredients for a stellar success have been within this company multiple times. So much potential and excitement as you join this company.

Cons

Executive leadership uses manipulation and lip service to drive initiatives forward like a steam rolling machine. Disregarding industry experts, pleas from the team, regulations, and general human decency. The lowest point of my career, I've watched as we've destroyed talented team member after talented team member. Never once reflecting inward on why the senior leadership team of such a promising organization is so cyclical. The company is more interested in writing off anyone that is not willing to follow exact orders regardless of applying their knowledge of expertise. Beware of ethics at this company as it is a sure way to land a target on your back. The executive team is a series of puppets waiting for the forced guidance of the few in the nepotistic inner circle. If you are not best friends with the CEO and a graduate of Harvard your opinions are entirely discarded.

Pros

There are some very smart and driven people at Valon, and you’ll learn quickly about mortgages, fintech, and the complexity of a regulated industry.

Cons

Turnover is high, which makes documentation and knowledge transfer nearly impossible. When you try to figure things out, getting help often depends on asking the “right” question in the “right” way — otherwise people can be closed-off and unhelpful. The culture doesn’t foster down-to-earth collaboration, and knowledge rarely flows freely. Backend operations, data, and infrastructure are disorganized — with constant fires, fragile integrations, and little process clarity. Collaboration with the Arizona team handling operations is especially challenging, and the communication gap is significant. The company has the negatives of a large corporation without the positives of a startup — bureaucracy and formality without agility or creativity. The culture overall feels odd and difficult to navigate. On the product side, there’s no clear AI strategy, and the platform isn’t meaningfully better than incumbents — at best, it’s only marginally improved. Leadership frequently sets expectations that don’t align with resources or the company’s reality, which drives added frustration and turnover. Feedback is not delivered in a timely or transparent way, and the CEO remains largely disconnected from employees. Overall, the structure and culture undermine both sustainable growth and employee success.
