Pros

- A company shows its mettle during a crisis. I've seen people (top down) show some of the strongest ethics, maturity, and courage imaginable in the last 6 months. - Heather is a gifted and serious leader. I genuinely believe that most of the good things about WPE cascade from her leadership and high quality hiring. - Some of the smartest and most genuinely talented folks I've worked with. - Remote-first culture, with no indication that an RTO mandate is around the corner. - People celebrate accomplishments ALL THE TIME at WPE. - While nowhere near top-of-market, the compensation and benefits are fair. With tech companies doing hard cultural pivots, WPE has such a distinct quality of life advantage right now that makes up for leaving a little money on the table.

Cons

- Big one: the uncertainty that we live with in the wake of Matt Mullenweg's unhinged behavior, both toward WPE and toward the WordPress ecosystem in general. Causes a lot of unnecessary anxiety. - For teams that aren't near an office hub, it's been hard to get budget approval to travel for IRL meetups. - Restructuring that has resulted in layoffs last year also caused a fair amount of anxiety for employees. - Career growth opportunities are limited lately. Probably true everywhere, but when you're not in hyper-growth mode, there just aren't many spots available to grow into. - Leadership in WordPress seems dedicated to making all the wrong decisions. At best, they're committed to throwing good money after bad on a visual/block editor (Gutenberg) while mostly ignoring improvements to the CMS, and at worst they are intentionally antagonizing their engaged user and developer community. WPE should probably figure out a way to diversify our product lines.

We sincerely appreciate you leaving such thoughtful and insightful feedback! We're so glad to hear you've had such a positive experience with things like our response to recent events, our CEO Heather (we agree, she rocks), our virtual-first work model and benefits we provide, and of course the people we have the privilege of working alongside every day. Our virtual-first hybrid model create some challenges in regards to bringing people together, but we're actively exploring opportunities for teams to connect and hope to provide more chances for them to come together in person. We kicked off 2025 with an initiative called "Vision, Values, Victory" which aims to ensure all employees at WP Engine understand our business goals and how we plan to get to there. It's our hope that this new framing will allow everyone to see how their work fits into the bigger picture. This year we're providing a number of workshops for both managers and individual contributors with the goal of ensuring everyone at WP Engine can grow their career, if you haven't done so we'd encourage you to take a look at these offerings and sign up for any workshops that might be applicable to your own career aspirations. If you ever have more feedback to share, positive or constructive, we'd encourage you to reach out to your EE Business Partner as we're always looking for feedback so we can all thrive together. Thank you again for sharing such thoughtful feedback, we're very glad to have you here at WP Engine!

Pros

Leadership strives to do the right thing, and there are a lot of smart and kind people at the company. It's a place you can learn and grow.

Cons

As with any venture-capital-backed company, financials begin to drive decisions more over time. Recent layoffs are one example. It means that the culture isn't as special as it once was.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences at WP Engine, feedback from employees is crucial to our continued success. We're committed to the growth and development of our people so we're glad to hear you feel this is a place where you can build a career and lean into new skillsets. Our culture is nothing without the smart and kind people who make it what it is, we're glad you agree! While we continue to grow and invest in talent and technology, we restructured to further align our investments to our business strategy. This also required us to make the difficult decision to eliminate a small percentage of roles. We value the contribution of our employees and the decision was not taken lightly. We have been supporting those who are impacted with access to potential new opportunities inside WP Engine along with career coaching, job placement services, and transition financial support. If you feel comfortable doing so, we encourage you to share any other feedback you may have, positive or constructive, with your EE Business Partner or someone else on the Employee Experience Team. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts!

Pros

- Great co-workers - Managers are a majority, on your side - Best PTO policy

Cons

WP Engine has been without a doubt, one of the best organizations I've ever worked for. But as technology and the economy rapidly changes, the more I see a consistent need, and trouble to keep up with it' competitors. This has in turn caused the org to rely on "strategic and structural changes" which has in turn, caused the company to lose some of the best and brightest employees due to layoffs, and has caused hiring freezes, preventing upward mobility/growth, a facet that the company continues to harp on. (not once, but twice in the last 3 years). I know many of our techs continue to look for opportunities elsewhere due to the uncertainty and fear. We've lost some incredibly great leaders as well, and while they never provided a definitive reason other than "it's time for a change," many of us are left continuously thinking that they knew about the ongoing issues and current strategic changes, and left before things got worse. List of cons below - Uncertainty with company direction - No upward mobility or growth due to outsourcing, hiring freezes, lay offs - Consistently flexed to 3 chats to meet the demand. (2 chat initiative was introduced in 2021 and is never fully implemented due to supply not meeting demand) - Customers can be immature and have no accountability for themselves and will blame techs for every single issue their site faces.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and feedback, it's incredibly important for our continued growth. While we're glad to hear you enjoy your co-workers, managers, and our PTO policy, we're concerned to hear that support techs feel like there's no upward mobility or opportunities to build a career path. While we have slowed our hiring plans at times, we haven't ever done a hiring "freeze". Within the Support Organization, we hire nearly exclusively at the entry level and promote from within for all non entry level roles. Our L2 techs are typically the most sought after internal candidates often moving into CSM, TAM, Sales Engineering, Production Engineering, and Product roles, giving them many opportunities for career advancement. In regards to chats, we're currently reviewing this as part of a larger review in how we operate as a team. We have heard feedback from employees and are looking for ways to keep from flexing beyond two concurrent chats to ensure success for all of our techs. We sincerely appreciate you sharing your experience and if you feel comfortable doing so would encourage you to reach out to your EE Business Partner or anybody on the Employee Experience Team to talk more about what we can do to address your concerns.

Pros

Autonomy and Work Life Balance

Cons

Employees have been waiting for years to see if they go public or get bought. Seems like it's taking forever. Also, they have had 2 rounds of layoffs in the last year (although small) which has hurt morale.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us as it guides our growth as a company. We're really glad to hear you felt you had a healthy work-life balance and the autonomy you needed to do your job well. While we continue to grow and invest in talent and technology, we restructured to further align our investments to our business strategy. This also required us to make a difficult talent prioritization to eliminate roles that impacted a small percentage of our employees. We obviously value the contribution of our employees and the decision was not taken lightly. We are supporting those who are impacted with access to potential new opportunities inside WP Engine along with career coaching, job placement services, and transition financial support. Thank you for your contributions to WP Engine and for taking the time to share your feedback, we wish you the very best in future endeavors.
