Pros

Good pay Good Hours Central Location Interesting Work Free Fruit

Cons

I'm posting this as there has been a suspicious spate of positive reviews left over the course of a week in October. I worked at Breakthrough for a year and have never experienced such a toxic environment. Management is non-existent and barely functions as a clique that doesn't filter information or offer any support to the staff underneath it. There's a huge staff turnover with many talented people being let go for a number of arbitrary reasons. The work is slow and is often irrelevant by the time it is published, thanks in part to the breakdown of communication between upper management and those who actually do the work. One manager in particular was a bully and I'd be extremely alarmed if they're still there (as they were also incompetent). Being there for as long as I was had an effect on my mental health and to this day working at Breakthrough is the biggest regret of my career. Knowing the company as I do, it would be no surprise to learn that those positive reviews left in October came from within the HR department as a directive from above.

Hi – it's Robert, the CEO at Breakthrough. I’m sorry to read you didn’t enjoy your time with us and would like to find out more about why that was. We have done a lot right in the six years we've been going, but of course - in growing so fast- there have been challenges along the way, and I am keen to learn from them, particularly where they can help improve the working experience of our teams. With that in mind, I warmly welcome any further feedback you’d like to offer, either directly or through the HR team: feedback@breakthroughmedia.org. We're improving how we recognise, motivate and invest in people, that includes creating a culture that encourages open two-way feedback with everyone, not just the management team. I believe we've made huge progress recently and have cultivated a positive, creative and supportive workplace for the vast majority of staff which has been widely remarked on, including through this site. Rest assured, we do not seek to influence the content of any reviews, everyone is free to speak truthfully and openly. Do feel free to contact me, I'm ready to listen to any feedback you'd like to offer.

Pros

There's a talented group of people at Breakthrough, working hard to ensure that the quality of the work being produced is top quality. The work can be interesting and challenging. The building is in a good location and the pay is good.

Cons

There's a culture of fear at Breakthrough. People's jobs never seem safe (I lost count of the amount of people who were let go without warning). The company has only one client and due to the nature of the work a lot of information doesn't make it down the chain, which is frustrating and counter productive. There's a sense that the company is happy to put square pegs into round holes as a lot of senior and middle management aren't fit for purpose. Requests and concerns often go ignored and there's a futility in raising concerns as it'll be used against you later. The entire time I was there I didn't feel like I could trust anybody. Career prospects are slim as nobody has heard of the company and moving up the chain within seems pointless as there's a low ceiling. There wasn't enough work when I started, which carried on for quite some time. This meant that I was often left twiddling my thumbs throughout the day, and when I requested training for something (software etc) there was nobody to run a workshop and seemingly no training budget. Almost everybody there was looking to move on to something else, which meant the atmosphere was incredibly toxic. I feel sorry for anyone still there.

Pros

Excellent pay, well decorated office

Cons

Due to the sensitive nature of the work, you are unable to get an idea of what the company actually does until you start working there - the website is very vague. The nature of the communications work is not for the faint hearted - I personally found it unsettling. There were limited working structures in place, when I started I was given no indication of what was expected of me, poor management and complete lack of communication in my team, and between teams. The workload was very low, I was extremely bored and the actual work I was given was vague. The management there seemed to be making it up as they went along, with no idea how a normal communications agency works. So far in my career this was the worst job I’ve had.
