I worked at hmv part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly staff, always changing atmosphere, can be challenging when trying to meet targets.

    Cons

    It was a temporary position.
Some people who work there will niggle at you about the small things (like which way to put the money in the till when you have a huge line of customers).

I have been working at hmv full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Great people
    - Management strategies are fantastic
    - Job isn't confusing

    Cons

    - Targets you have to meet which are unachievable
    - No incentives
    - Wages are horrific

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the pay difference for different age groups - its 2018, not the 1960's.

I worked at hmv part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Variation throughout the days roles, which are pre-determined at the start of each day by management. Roles are generally split between serving on the till, walking the shop floor to greet and help customers, and working on your preferred department which involves tasks such as replenishing stock, filing products for easy retrievable when required, updating labels, etc.

Hired staff often have common interests which allows for good communication and discussion in the working day, with staff and customers alike.

Recognition for beating KPI's, sometimes with additional financial benefits for performing exceptionally well.

Updated regularly on positive customer feedback.

Employee of the month scheme began after I left, awarding an additional holiday for the chosen employee.

Excellent staff discount on all products, with the exception of gift cards etc.

    Cons

Slight pressure to perform well on selected KPI's, which do become easier to obtain over time.

Job requires standing doing very little during quiet periods, as it is a priority to be available for customers at all times both on the shop floor and behind the till. Very understandable, though some like me would rather swap roles with someone and keep busy.

Fixed breaks determined by management at the start of the day. The option may be there to swap with someone else if they are happy with that, though generally it means a preferred time or fixed time might not occur.

    No smoking breaks are allowed.

    Advice to Management

Although it would not be easy, if at all possible to monitor, it would be good to receive recognition for selling products that are not the selected KPI's. For instance, I recommended a vinyl as a Christmas present that cost over £35, much higher than the average vinyl in price, but I was still seen as underperforming at the time because I was below the desired KPI target.

Although days off that are needed can be swapped with a high level of flexibility, it would be good to have a designated sheet in the staff area where written requests can be noted for shifts off in advance, with the specified dates notes as either essential or preferred perhaps. This was staff can get their requests across without feeling they are bothering management for future plans.

I worked at hmv part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people in the shop, anyone above (head office etc.) you never hear from. Get to chose your own music for the shop a lot and staff discount is good.

    Cons

Pay is bad for younger people, I worked the same job (often better than others) and got paid less due to being a couple of years younger. Will probably go out of business soon.

    Advice to Management

Pay staff a fair wage, try not to go out of business
