This week is National Glaucoma Awareness Week... Glaucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve, that connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. Itโs generally caused by a buildup of fluid in the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye. At Boots Opticians, there are a number of different tests we can carry out to help prevent Glaucoma in our patients and customers. Want to join the team? Following the success of the sunflower lanyard in our COVID-19 vaccination sites, we are proud to have now introduced the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme across all our Boots UK and Boots Opticians stores. The lanyard allows people to discreetly indicate that they have a hidden disability, such as autism, chronic pain or dementia, by wearing an easily recognisable sunflower lanyard or pin badge. "This is such a momentous scheme as it now gives a sense of freedom for those living with disabilities that are not always obvious. You can imagine the impact having an invisible disability has on your mental health. You donโt want to go out to encounter this humiliation. Going to the shops or just enjoying life with your friends becomes an experience you would rather avoid than enjoy. Now I can flash my sunflower lanyard without having to explain myself, feel embarrassed or humiliate myself." - Sally Lodge, Boots Opticians, Learning & Development
