Have you had a chance to pay us a visit lately? Discover our stunning installations across the store paying homage to all things Made With Love - the displays are all a testament to the hard work and vision of our Visual Merchandising team!
Today we’re highlighting one of our exceptional Sales Associates, who exceeded expectations for an extra special customer. “The story starts on Monday morning, with a desperate call from a customer, seeking a yellow taxi for his young son. I offered to paint one of our traditional taxis - the customer gratefully accepted. I carefully repainted the toy and designed some bespoke license plates. Many kind words later, the customer departed with a smile on his face and taxi in hand. I was so pleased to help fulfill a child's wish!” - Harry, Toy Kingdom.
With Christmas recruitment already on our minds, we visited our archives to uncover a photograph of our first festive illumination. The image, taken in 1959, shows the store front covered in glowing lightbulbs. This night-time display proved so popular, it soon became a regular Christmas feature and was eventually made permanent. With one of our most distinctive hallmarks originating from Christmas, we’ve always placed special importance on the festive season. Teams from our Head Office and shop floor enjoyed a colourful day at the Chelsea Youth Club yesterday, applying a fresh lick of paint to their gym and music room. The day was organised by our charity partners, Kensington & Chelsea Foundation, who work closely with Epic CIC – an organisation dedicated to delivering a comprehensive range of youth support services. Volunteers not only improved the physical environment of the centre, but also connected with young members, learning more about the local community and the club’s positive impact within it.
“To be a part of such an iconic store with its rich heritage has been amazing, it’s an experience I will never forget!” As we wave goodbye to our talented students, Donnavan and Rebecca reflect on their Harrods journey and what spending a week in the business meant to them.
With a 19% year-on-year rise in the use of food banks across the country, places like the Dalgarno Food Bank (in association with our local charity partner Kensington & Chelsea Foundation) are key to providing vital support to communities in need. Members of the Harrods Media team recently volunteered here, helping with the distribution of food – a day well spent working as a team and learning about the needs of vulnerable residents in the nearby areas.
"What I enjoy most about my job is formulating the strategy before we make the decisions – whether it’s an exclusive new brand addition or working on the design of a new shop fit. The buyer is integral to every aspect of these decisions at Harrods, which is a unique position to be in." - Lucy, Beauty Buyer.
In 1932, Dennis Francis won a Handwriting Competition for schools, created by the Harrods General Manager Richard Burbidge. We spoke to our Archivist, Sebastian who organised Dennis’ reunion with the shield that he had received over 80 years ago. “Upon meeting Dennis, I learnt that he went on to become a successful graphic designer, attributing his early typography talent, realised and recognised through this competition, to his choice of career. I think it’s fantastic that Harrods was able to support its local community and have such an impact on the young Dennis Francis.”
"At Harrods, we have the opportunity to engage with every level of management and different functions on a regular basis. I've experienced many pivotal career moments during my time here that have tested and shown me what I'm really capable of achieving. The business has invested in me immensely, allowing me to attend the Oxford summer school which is definitely one of my career highlights. I've always been encouraged to do my best and my recent promotion to General Sales Manager for Childrenswear has demonstrated the huge career advancement opportunities here. I'm over the moon!" - Valine
Since we launched our new charity partnerships with The Kensington & Chelsea Foundation and NSPCC in February, many Harrodians from across the business have volunteered their time to support these worthy causes. This is a fantastic achievement, and we're always encouraging our employees to use a full or half Giving Back Day to support charities. Volunteering activities have ranged from hosting bake and sample sales, to team challenges and mentoring.
