As a leading innovator of products that reduce our customer's emissions, our focus in 2021 was on improving our own energy efficiency, procuring renewable and clean energy sources, and evaluating the replacement of higher-emission fuels with less-carbon-intensive fuels. By the end of 2021, we had lowered greenhouse gas emissions by 38% against 2015 levels and reduced 19% compared to 2020. Our sites are continuing to implement best practice to reduce energy consumption globally, as part of an effort to not only use energy more wisely but to drive down CO2 emissions.
Minimising the environmental impact of our business, conserving resources and promoting environmental awareness across our global operations are key to building a sustainable business. To conserve and protect water use across Morgan, we are focused on site actions. We have two new projects which include rainwater harvesting and cooling towers in our Aurangabad, India and Kizad, UAE locations. By reducing municipal water use we also reduce the amount of water a municipality has to pump and treat; allowing the municipality opportunities to reduce costs too. These savings can then be applied to provide long-term water development needs of the community, by utilising the existing infrastructure more efficiently. We see rainwater harvesting as a vital part of developing a sustainable water resource plan in areas of high and extremely high-water stress.
We support nine of The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to overcome global challenges such as inequality and climate change. Of these goals, six directly relate to the environment and water use. We're fully committed to contributing to the global efforts to build a better, more sustainable world for generations to come. Learn about the goals we support.
Our focus on sustainability goes far beyond our own sites and teams. Many parts of our business support the transition to net zero across a range of industries. Our high performance materials are helping to create a more sustainable future.
Reducing energy use across our sites is an important part of our sustainability strategy. At our Ranipet site, in an effort to reduce energy by 10% across the manufacturing process, the operations and engineering team targeted energy improvements for the annealing ovens. Focusing primarily on heat retention and burner tuning within the ovens, we successfully reduced specific energy consumption (per kilogram of product) for RCF by 25%, and for Superwool Plus by 29%. Learn more about our sustainability goals.
Each of us has an environmental footprint. By taking personal action to be more eco-friendly we can each take steps to minimise our own impact and create a better environment. Whether you choose to reinvent meals with your leftovers, use a reusable bag for your purchases or store your notes in the cloud, amongst many other options, we're confident that Zero Waste Home's 100 eco tips will give you some great ideas.
As we focus on a month of sustainability, it is important to acknowledge the climate change anxiety that exists for many people in the world too. Whilst it is important for companies and individuals to acknowledge their responsibilities for building a sustainable future; it is a shared responsibility and not one for an individual to burden. If you're struggling with eco-anxiety, check out Time's resources for help.

On our mission to bust common sustainability jargon, today we'll be focused on carbon emissions. If you read about sustainability targets and goals, the reduction of CO2 emissions is often top of the list, with these referred to as 'scope' 1-3, but what exactly do these goals target? ✔️Scope 1: Carbon emissions which occur directly from a facility; for example burning natural gas to heat a kiln ✔️Scope 2: Carbon emissions that occur offsite, but from which we use the resulting energy in our processes; for example electricity from the grid. ✔️Scope 3: All other indirect emissions associated with doing business; for example raw material manufacture, employee commuting or transportation of goods Learn about how we're tackling CO2 reduction, in our ESG strategy below.
Taking accountability for the impact of our waste, is an important part of being a responsible business. At Morgan, our continuous improvement focus enables us to apply 'lean’ ’ principles to our operations, processes and products; minimising waste and making better use of the world's resources.
