Our fourth safety commitment is - we don’t walk by and we report safety problems we identify. Taking care means never walking by anything unsafe, however busy we are. We know that a hazard reported is an opportunity to learn and improve. Our commitment supports us to: • Always stop an unsafe act - if we see something we take action • Report hazards - as reporting unsafe acts or conditions can prevent serious accidents • Not walk by - a hazard can cause harm • Be curious, if we don’t know, we ask.
Embracing our safety commitments We’ve being asking those of you who've been on our new ThinkSAFE training what you think and how it has helped you. Jimmie, from our Quality Department in Kempten, talks about how the training has impacted him: "My behaviour has changed so that I go through the plant with the intention of being more attentive and discover dangers I never noticed before.” #thinkSAFE

As part of our focus on safety this November, we are talking about our safety commitments. Today we want to share with you, why our commitment to 'taking 5 for safety and stopping for danger’ is important to us? We show we care by working safely and sticking to the rules. We also know that looking out for hazards and keeping our workplace safe is also an important part of showing we care. When you work in the same place every day, it’s easy to overlook some hazards. At Morgan a 'Take 5' assessment helps us focus on the risks involved before starting a task, and can also be used as a safety check if things change.
Our strategy is to build distinctive capabilities in customer focus, application engineering and materials science. Our partnership with the University of Manchester National Graphene Institute, enables us to do just that. At the National Graphene Institute, our main focus is around understanding interfacial interactions between different components of a composite, enabling modification to properties through this understanding. We are focused on carbon related technology developments using new materials, such as graphene. We are also researching new carbon advances for both our Electrical Carbon and Seals and Bearings businesses. Our Senior Materials Scientist Darren commented: "As a member of the Centre of Excellence embedded at the University of Manchester, I am involved in exciting cutting edge technology on a daily basis, whilst utilising this in real world applications throughout Morgan."
Our third safety commitment is - we take five for safety and stop for danger. We have rules and procedures to control the risks, but we must not lose focus or get complacent to the hazards around us. Taking just 5 minutes to check your tools; equipment; PPE, workspace and route could save your life or the life of someone else. • Take 5 is the first line of defense • Always use take 5 for yourself and others before starting a task • Take 5 when anything changes and if unsure stop • Use it at home as well as work.

Our second safety commitment is - we must be trained, and always follow the safety rules. Care is about knowing how to do a job safely, understanding the risks and respecting the rules that are there to protect us. If you’re not sure how to do something, then always stop and ask. • Know the rules • Know the risks and understand the hazards • Ensure you are trained so you understand • Don’t take a shortcut for any reason • Apply your training and if you are unsure, stop and ask.
