The State of WebAssembly 2022 survey results are in! And, as Colin Eberhardt explains, they make for fascinating reading. The use of wasm for serverless, containerisation and as a plug-in technology has leapt considerably, with WebAssembly System Interface (WASI) becoming ever more important. Read Colin’s analysis of the results here.
Tomorrow evening, join us for Open Source Edinburgh! We have two fantastic speakers lined up: Reg Wilkinson, Z DevOps Centre of Excellence Lead at Lloyds Banking Group, and Adam Mcmurchie, Lead Data, DevOps & Cloud Engineer at NatWest Group. Reg will speak on the topic of how Lloyds Banking Group is creating the ultimate hybrid cloud in coordination with IBM and Red Hat. Reg leads the Z Platform DevOps team within Lloyds Banking Group’s DevOps Centre of Excellence. He has been writing software since 1981 and his first commercial delivery was as co-creator of a game for the Commodore 16 in 1986! Having worked on many platforms and in many languages over more than a quarter of a century in enterprise-scale IT, Reg is not only interested in the dots blobs and squiggles that make up code, but in how applications are designed and delivered. Come and hear Reg explain how Lloyds Banking Group’s Z platform is ensuring that the bank's mainframes don't hold it back from offering innovative customer experiences. We run the Open Source meetups in partnership with FINOS.
Our Pride 🌈 event last Thursday, ‘Remember, Resist, Rise Up’, brought together a fantastic group of panellists—Ali Hannon, Laura Crow, Brian Renwick and Terry Brown—for a wide-ranging, moving and inspiring discussion facilitated by our CEO Stephen Foreshew-Cain. Today is the anniversary of the beginning of the Stonewall Riots in NYC in 1969. In setting the context for the discussion, Steve explains that the hard-won civil liberties gained in the decades since the riots are under increasing threat. 📺 You can watch the full video here: https://youtu.be/lkyPNRDEuBw

Open Source Edinburgh is a week away! We have two fantastic speakers lined up: Adam Mcmurchie, Lead Data, DevOps & Cloud Engineer at NatWest Group, and Reg Wilkinson, Z DevOps Centre of Excellence Lead at Lloyds Banking Group. Adam will speak on the topic 'Open Source as a Culture: Part 2' – a follow-up to his talk at our Jan 2020 meetup. Adam started out as a bricklayer and labourer. He has since transformed himself several times, from teaching physics in academia, to translating multiple languages around the world, to driving digital transformations at some of the biggest banks in the world. Connecting all of these seemingly unrelated dots is Adam’s ardent focus on mutual uplift and discouraging Tech Elitism. As such, Adam champions open source. With hundreds of repos online, Adam commits publicly about 50 times per week. Adam also invests significant time in mentoring, helping women and men with no STEM background to break into tech. Come and enjoy Adam’s latest insights on open source as a culture – join us at Scott Logic’s Edinburgh office on Weds 29 June.
On Friday 8 July, join us for Techie Brekkie Edinburgh to find out why 'Code is a Natural Language'. Alec McEachran, Principal Software Developer at KPV LAB Edinburgh and formerly of YouTube, will explain that in order to write code well, we have to pay attention to our code’s natural language. Writing code is about formalising algorithms that computers can execute, but it’s also about communicating ideas between you and your teammates. Over time, this communicative part becomes more important. You can join the group here and book your place: https://www.meetup.com/techie-brekkie-edinburgh/ Or if you're already a member, you can book your place here: https://www.meetup.com/techie-brekkie-edinburgh/events/286629497/ 🗓️ Friday 8 July 🕗 08:00-09:00 📍 Edinburgh EH3
In his latest post, our CEO Steve Foreshew-Cain shares his thoughts on the continuing relevance and importance of Pride Month 🌈. At Scott Logic, we’ve adopted this year’s Northern Pride theme—Remember, Resist, Rise Up—and, as Steve explains, there are many good reasons why, from the personal to the political. A week today, Steve will be hosting a Pride discussion panel on the same theme of 'Remember, Resist, Rise Up'. Register to join the live stream or to attend in person at our Newcastle HQ: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/remember-resist-rise-up-pride-panel-discussion-tickets-353664468947 If you can't make it and would like to watch the recording, register and we'll send it to you after the event.
